Vehicle Detail
1972 Plymouth Duster All Original with only 71,000 miles. Disc brakes, console shift automatic w/318 What’s the story on this car? I was talking with a guy who used to play semi-pro ball with my father recently when the conversation turned to the fact that he wanted to clean out his barn / shop and yard so he and his wife could downsize. He mentioned that he had an old Plymouth in his shop that he got from his mother when she was just too old to drive safely. I asked if I could see it and after an hour waiting while he located the keys to the overhead door, we looked inside and there was this 72 Duster. It was covered with all manner of shop stuff and dust. When I saw the stripe and the interior, I was really hoping is was a 340 car. When I looked under the hood, it turned out to be a 318. It turns out she ordered the car new from a local dealer here in Utah. She wanted the 318 engine but wanted the car to have the 340 packages, like the floor shift and gauges. The car was supposed to come with a performance hood, but when it showed up, it had the stock hood on it. She didn’t want to make a fuss so she took it as it came in. I expressed interest in the car and soon after, we came to an agreement on price. I went home, grabbed the trailer and a new battery along with some fresh gas. After checking the wiring and making sure it would turn, I hit the key and it fired right up. I took the car home and gave it a thorough cleaning and put more hours on the engine to see what leaked. So far, I can see that there is an oil leak, I would certainly replace the fuel pump and run a kit through the carb. I replaced the master cylinder and the brakes work fine. The plugs look good, the cap is good and the wires look to be in good condition. This car is bone stock original. At some point it was re-painted, but you can still see the original paint under the hood, door jambs and trunk area. The original spare is still in the trunk along with the original jack and tire iron. What a cool time capsule this was. The car runs and drives great, but will need a few minor items as described above. I have decoded the trim tag below for you. The paint job is not the best and there are the usual dings and dents. The only real issue is the dent in the passenger rear quarter by the tail light (See Pics) There is virtually NO rust on the car with the exception of some surface rust on the inner fenders under the hood. (See Pics) The car still has the original hubcaps, bumpers and trim. The windshield is broken and will need to be replaced INTERIOR The interior of the car is all stock. There is a cassette player in the dash. The dash is cracked in one place. The passenger seat has some sun rot on one panel. The driver’s seat and the back seats are perfect. The carpeting along the console on the driver’s side needs to be glued back down. There is a dent in the upper door panel of the driver’s door. The headliner is perfect. The original spare with the jack and tire iron are still in the trunk. ENGINE The engine is the 318 2-bbl. everything under the hood is original and has not been changed. It needs a carburetor kit and a fuel pump. I would give it a thorough tune up. I have installed a new battery. The car runs and drives well, it just doesn’t want to start on it’s own due to the bad pump. DRIVETRAIN The drive train doesn’t have any issues. The trans shifts well, the brakes work fine. The tires are in good condition and it all feels tight. SUMMARY Well, that is the best description of this car I can give you. It really is a neat car that has not been molested in any way. The fact that the guy kept it in the shop instead of outside has saved this car making the full restoration a much easier job.
