Vehicle Detail

You are looking at a very nice classic station wagon. 1962 was the first year the Comet wore the Mercury name on the body. This is a Custom model and there were only 16,759 station wagons made in 1962 which included S22 and basic models. You see a lot of Falcons but very few of these. The extra chome and stainless really sets these apart. The list price was $2526. This wagon was $3098 with the automatic transmission, power brakes, padded dash, back up lights, push button radio, full wheel covers, passenger side view mirror and electric rear window listed as options. I even have the original bill of sale from Foothill Motors in Pasadena that shows the trade-in allowance of $75 for a 1950 Dodge. This car started out as a 6 cyl with the merc-o-matic transmission but now sports a top of the line 289 punched out to a 302 from a 66 mustang. The conversion was done with all the desirable components that function nicely together. The transmission is a C 4 from a 1969 model #PEE with an intake manifold from a 68 Mustang (C8ZZ) and a Holley 600 CFM from a 67 390 center pivot. Rear end is out of a 1957 Ford 9" 3.25 center locker. Classic style headers into a quiet single 2 1/2 inch makes this a real sleeper. Looks and sounds totally stock, but will really run. Cruises down the freeway at 75 and the tach is reading 3400 RPM. It was also converted to 5 lug with 14 inch tires. Last weekend was the Dearborn Classic Car Show here in Oregon and after the car show we all got to run a 1/4 mile at theWoodburn track. With no special tires and an inexperienced 1/4 mile driver (me) the wagon ran a 16.12 at 89.17 MPH. It is no race car but does go down the road straight and tight. Over the last year the car has master cylinder and wheel cylinders replaced as well at all new hoses, belts, carb gaskets, fuel pump, alternator, and ignition (Ford Duraspark II). The only body work this wagon has had was a left front fender replaced in 1973 and there is a small area under the gas cap that appears to have a little filler in it and some small scratches. The rear bumper has a slight bend in it but the chrome is in amazing shape all over this car. The door jams, and bottom of the doors are perfect, and the only surface rust I can find is the rear of the hood lip. The bottom side of this car is solid with no rust anywhere. This is not a restored car, just a dry clean original. Other than the windshield the glass is perfect. The windshield has a stone mark. The doors close just like they are supposed to and all the hinges are tight. The keys are original and I also have an extra set of original blanks that come with the car as well as a car cover. Interior is in amazing shape with the upgraded two-tone red and white trim package. There are a couple of spots in the carpet that are getting a little thin but it is very presentable. The door panels, trim, dash and headliner are all in excellent condition. I would rate it an 8.5 out of 10. The only things I can think of that are areas needing attention would be the steering wheel is from a cyclone, wind lace is worn, paint is thin in spots, the transmission leaks a little, and the transmission slips out of park at idle. I just put the emergency brake on and leave it in neutral.
