1961 Porsche 356B Karmann Notchback San Francisco, CA 415-205-0716 sales@carplanet.com 1961 Porsche 356B Karmann Notchback This excellent rare Karmann Notchback was sold new on 8/24/61 at San Diego Motor Imports in San Diego, California. The first owner, a doctor in Newport Beach, commuted regularly with the car until selling it to it's second owner in 1991, who then stored it in Palm Springs, CA. The third owner, residing in Michigan, purchased the car in 2005. With only 1,048 produced this T5 Notchback is rare. Being rust free and matching numbers makes this example even more desirable. Excellent and attractive Signal Red paint with Light Grey interior. Professionally maintained and in excellent mechanical condition throughout. Delivered new with rare original Hella fog lights and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. The original service book and owner's manual are still present. This 356 is ready to provide it's next owner with many years of enjoyment. The following is a detailed description of the car, along with over one hundred high resolution photos and four videos. Please email or call us at 415-205-0716, if you have any questions. Body, Paint and Trim Having resided in California from 1961 through 2005, the body remains in excellent condition. All areas of the body are rust free. All closing panels are original, have very good gaps and are stamped with the last two chassis number digits (57). The original trunk lid has never been kinked. The floors and longitudinals are original. The battery box has been replaced. The body is free of door dings and there is only one small dent in the lower right corner of the front spoiler. During our magnet test, we found no areas of thick filler in the lower areas of the body. All the trim parts are in very good condition with most appearing to be originals. The glass is all original with no chips. There are minor scrapes in the passenger side door window and one on the driver side window. Each one should polish out fine. Front and rear light lenses show no cracks. All chrome parts show good to excellent shine. All weatherstripping is present and in good condition. The attractive and original color Signal Red paint (color code #6011) was professionally applied approximately five years ago and is in excellent condition with excellent shine and no significan blemishes. No cracks and only two to three very small stone chips were found up front. High quality Glasurit paint was used during the repaint. Interior Per the previous owner, the Light Grey interior is all original, except for the front seats. Overall the interior is in very good condition with no rips or stains in the original headliner and only one worn area showing on the original carpet on the back of the left rear seat back. An additional area of visible wear we located was on the vinyl at the top edge of the left rear seat back. The gauges, switches and knobs on the face of the dash are all in excellent original condition. The original steering wheel and sunvisors are present and are also in excellent condition. The Signal Red paint on the dash appears to be the original paint and shows some minor chips near the gauges. Below is a slideshow of photos. Electricals Headlights (low and high beams), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, license plate lights, horn, radio and windshield wipers are functional. This 356 was also sold new with rare optional amber Hella foglights. Foglight switch lights up, but the foglights themselves are not. . The starter and generator are functioning properly. Speedometer, tachometer, oil temp and fuel gauges are functional. Oil pressure and generator lights are functional. The odometer is functional and currently reads 17,500 miles, likely 217,500 on the chassis. The battery is in very good condition. Below is a slideshow of photos. Engine and Transmission The engine is the original 1600 Normal (engine number 606069 as documented in the original service book) and runs very well with the following very good compression readings: CYL #1 - 120psi, CYL #2 - 130psi, CYL #3 - 127psi, CYL #4 - 125psi Prior owner estimated 80,000 well cared for miles on the engine, since it's last rebuild, but stated the car has been driven only 2500 miles, since 1991. Once running the engine idles and accelerates smoothly with very good power. The engine doesn't smoke and no significant oil leaks were found during our inspection. Original Zenith carburetors were replaced with Webers within the last five years. Recent engine maintenance includes valve adjustment, timing adjusted, new distributor cap, new spark plugs, carburetors tuned and engine oil changed. An electric fuel pump and Pertronix ignition system is installed, which ensures easy starts and no need to replace ignition points. The original 741 transmission (number 46477, dated June 1961) is installed and shifts smoothly into every gear with no grinding or unusual noises. It's gear set is the original BBBC. The ride is comfortable with no unusual noises. Alignment was good, during our test drive on the freeway. Koni shocks are installed in front and rear and are in good condition. The original matching date (4/61) KPZ wheels are installed. They are each in excellent condition and painted in matching Signal Red Glasurit. 165SR15 Yokohama S-701 All Season radial tires are installed and are in good condition with good tread and no cracks.
