Vehicle Detail
INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION You are viewing my 1978 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham. I purchased this vehicle in 2005 from the original owner. As you can see, it has the rare “St Regis” option package, is 2 door hardtop, and has the even rarer 440 cubic inch V8 engine matched to a 727 “TorqueFlite” automatic transmission. The vehicle has 68,854 actual miles as of the start of this auction. This is the last model year of the legendary C-body Chryslers (this platform ran for 14 years, and included the classic 1969-1973 ”fuselage” designs) and also the last year for the venerable 440 cubic inch V8 engine. Subsequent “New Yorkers” built on smaller platforms, while nice cars in their own right, just figuratively and literally do not measure up to their big, powerful, agile predecessors like this vehicle. Even the design of this 1978 New Yorker, from its distinctive “waterfall” grille to its “bustle-back” deck lid, and its long, lean classic lines in between, is quite a sight to behold. As the Brougham model, this New Yorker is already very well-equipped, with options that include air conditioning, AM/FM four-speaker stereo, tinted glass, rear window defogger, power driver seat, power windows, power antenna, speed control, and premium wheel covers. It does not have tilt steering or sunroof. As indicated, it also has the “St. Regis” option package (only available on the two-door hardtops), which consisted of the forward-placed padded vinyl roof, opera windows, and other special trim features. The wheel covers are in excellent shape with older but well-treaded Goodyear 225/70/15 whitewall tires. The chrome is very good driver-quality (the upper grille has a few pock marks, as does the license plate area) and consistent with the age of the vehicle. This New Yorker is finished in Tapestry Red Sunfire Metallic (I had it professionally refinished in 2006) with matching optional "50/50" deluxe, tufted-leather interior (in excellent condition with exception of small tear shown driver seat back cushion seam). The headlight doors operate perfectly with no binding or excessive noise. The previous owner lived in Ohio, and as such had the vehicle extensively rust-proofed. So in addition to hardly driving it to keep it protected, the Ziebart® treatment has resulted in absolutely no rust (no rust-through, damage, or repair) of any kind whatsoever. The original 440-4V engine (the Lean Burn system is still connected) and TorqueFlite transmission both operate extremely well. The brakes are power front disc/rear drum. The air-conditioning system was converted to R134a by previous owner but requires a recharge, the power antenna is finicky and likely needs replacement (an uninstalled replacement is included with the vehicle), and the driver side mirror remote does not operate. This New Yorker is a rare, low-mileage remaining example of the 440 cubic-inch powered luxury coupes that Chrysler ever made. In addition to marking the end of an era at Chrysler, to some extent it also marked the end of big block-powered, smooth-riding, “turn-pike gobbling” cruisers that defined a generation of American cars from the late 1950’s until the late 1970’s – all gone and never to return. I hope it finds a new owner who will appreciate it for what is represents but also because in its own right it’s a really outstanding vehicle that should preserved for many more years to come. AUCTION SUCCESS CONSIDERATIONS This is the last time this year this car will appear on Ebay. As such, this time I am offering this car at no reserve. Please note that I reserve the right to end this auction early, for any reason at my sole discretion. So it may be important to consider bidding early and often up to whatever amount you are willing to pay. Note also this New Yorker is for sale locally. I am sorry in advance but the frequency of non-paying, unresponsive bidders makes it necessary to require the following: I truly appreciate anyone's legitimate interest in my auction that leads to responsible bidding, that in turn forms the basis for a potentially successful transaction. However, please DO NOT BID AT ALL if you do not have any required financing, insurance, storage, customs and duties information, spouse's permission ... whatever it is you need ... IN PLACE to allow you to honor your winning bid or any agreed-upon price related to a Second Chance Offer you may receive. Further, bidders with less than 5 (five) feedbacks will have their bids immediately canceled, no matter what the amount, unless you contact me in advance of bidding. Bidders outside North America (anywhere other than the US, Canada, or Mexico “mainland”) are welcome to bid, but also must email me before bidding. INSPECTION AND WARRANTY INFORMATION Questions will be answered in person or by email only. Again, given that this obviously is a used vehicle please do not have unreasonable expectations as to its current condition or future condition under your ownership. If you require it, please make all pre-bid inspections (at the sole expense of the bidder) before committing to purchase the car. Inspections can be done by appointment only until 24 hours before the auction’s end. Any and all questions you submit will be answered promptly and as thoroughly as possible. Although I believe I have described this vehicle accurately, please note that this vehicle is sold "as-is, where-is” with no express or implied warranties or guarantees of any kind. With the required legal statements provided, I am a reasonable person and I know potential buyers may not be able to see this car before bidding. If the winning bidder was unable do a pre-bid inspection and then determines that (after submitting a timely deposit but before taking delivery) I did not accurately represent the car in some significant and obvious way, then I will try to work it out with you. As reasonable people, if we cannot figure something out, I will immediately refund your entire deposit and we can both move on without any further obligation to each other. Please recognize that this is not an invitation for potential bidders to skip your own pre-bid investigations and is not an opportunity for me and the winning bidder to try later to negotiate away our respective contractual responsibilities. PAYMENT AND STORAGE A $500 deposit is required from the winning bidder, due electronically via PayPal within 24 hours after the auction ends, to hold the vehicle. I will not be accepting trades. Please bid responsibly by having any required financing in place before committing to purchase the vehicle as full payment is due within 7 days of auction end via cash or certified bank check (drawn on a major US bank). I can hold the vehicle in indoor storage for 15 days at no charge to the winning bidder after the auction (the charge is $15.00 per day after 15 days). Thank you for viewing my auction.
