Vehicle Detail
1968 Mercury Cougar NO RESERVE This little Cougar was bought new at Tillamook Motor Company on 5/4/1968, Tillamook, Oregon. The original owner sold it to a family around 1975, and it passed hands in Clark Family until around 2008. It has been in Oregon all of its life, which is the biggest reason that this car has survived, we have very mild winters, and cool summers, and we do not salt the roads. It was ordered with the 302 V8 "J" code engine 4v Carburetor 10:1 compression, 230hp, this is a numbers matching car, VIN number is stamped on the engine. The color of this car is Saxony Yellow (w) and there were only 21 Cougars that had this color and trim package (FY). This car was also ordered with a factory Bench Seat, with fold down armrest (only 2693, 1968 Cougars had this option out of 113,741 units). Also ordered on this Cougar was a Factory AM/8 track Radio (1770 units), Front Disc Brakes, Power Steering, Power Brakes, it has been upgraded with Dual Exhaust with H pipe and Turbo Mufflers, sounds really nice. Also it has newer tires on it, with 1968-1969 Original Ford/Merc Styled Steel Wheels, with correct plain caps and trim rings. These are wheels that folks usually refer to as the Eliminator Cougar Wheel. This Cougar, as you will see needs a good paint job, interior is in nice usable condition, mechanically it is in great shape, and you can drive it anywhere, it is very dependable and fun to drive. The body is in good shape, I took over 110 pictures of the Cougar, and also included pictures with a refrigerator magnet up and down the car, to show how solid it is, there is a little filler on the drivers quarter, but it is very thin, the magnet stuck there as well. I am not going to spend a lot of time talking about the body, the pictures pretty much speak for themselves. Here is what I will say, it has 4 small rust spots that will need to be repaired on the outer body, the rest of the car is great, no other rust bubbles, everything is really solid. So both corners of the doors, need a small patch. The passenger rear quarter, at the very bottom corners front and back need a patches. The other area that needs a rust repair, is the battery box, very easy fix. There are various dings and small indents on the car. The passenger door, and the passenger qaurter panel, you can see was rubbed against a pull or something and needs to be repaired. Ther are tons of scratches and chips on the car. Much of the car is in original paint as far as I can tell. the drivers fender was repainted, part of the door on drivers side, and front half of drivers qaurter. The passenger door has been repainted as well at some time. Doesn't really matter the car will need to be repainted down the road. This car is very straight forward, which is nice to see these days. Interior is in nice shape. The front seat is in nice shape, it is the original bench seat, these are hard to find. The bottom inserts replaced at some point. I do have Factory Material in a roll, if you chose to do all the inserts of the front and back down the road as well. On the drivers seat bottom, there looks to be a little burn were it melted the top layer about the size of pencil eraser head. The headliner is nice, but the are a few small tears, on the drivers side sail panel area. The carpet is brand new and is the correct color that it came with, it was matched up by West Coast Classic Cougar, they are a good resource for these Cougars, here in the Northwest. The heater works, but the heater lever is stuck in the down position, cable is probably bound a little. The temp gauge is not working, everythin else seems to function. He cigarette lighter works as well. The AM/8 track radio, turns on, and I can here a little noise out of the front speaker, but can not get a station out of it. All the windows roll up and down on the car nicely, it will need new window felts and rubbers in general they are original. The chrome on the car is original, and needs some polishing, and cleaning, but overall it looks nice on the car. There are a few dings are various chrome and trim, see pictures. The front windshield on the passenger side, has a small chip, that has been repaired in the past. The front headlight doors are in good shape, they open and close. When problem that happens, on these cars, is that over night the doors can open because of a bad vacuum canister and system, these doors on this car stay down, so there are not leaks, the system is in good usable shape. Wheels are original 1968-1969 Styled Steel wheels, and are in very nice shape, with good tires, with around 85 tread, I just had the wheels and tires balanced as well, so the car rides very smooth. The sequential turn signal unit needs repaired or replaced it makes a buzz noise, you can get these used or new units are available as well. Mechanically the car is in good order. It is the original 302 J code engine, the partial VIN is stamped on the drivers side, behind the intake manifold. It has been upgraded with a 4V Edelbrock Carburetor. It has a C4 Automatic Transmission, and it seems to be in good repair. The brakes work great, and suspension feels good, the car has a nice stance. I have about 100 reciepts on the car from 1975-2008 for various repairs, and upkeep. This has been a very loved little car, and hopefully the next owner will keep it a long time. If you want to drive it home, please do, it runs really good. It is a classic car, so bring some tools if you go that route, because it is old, you never know what could happen, but personally I trust it. The undercarriage of the car is really clean, original floors look awesome and clean. The rockers look excellant as well. The frame rails, and torque boxes again, look great. The trunk drop offs look good as well. Under the hood, trunk lid and door edges look very nice as well. The trunk area looks decent and is original, but there is some typical surface rust on the outer edges. Overall for a Cougar, the trunk area is in really nice shape, no rust around the gas tank, inner quarters look good, the inner tail light panel looks really nice as well. When was the last time you saw a factory Bench Seat in a Cougar? Door Tag Code 65C Factory 302 V8, 5th Digit in the Vin is "J", factory 4v engine. These engine intake manifolds have Ford Part number C8ZE, with Z is a Mustang Designation, used in the Cougar, Mustang, Shelby, California Special, performance models. This is the original engine to the car, it is numbers matching, VIN is stamped in the back of engine on pad, see next picture. Partial VIN number on back of engine, this is numbers matching. There is around 100 receipts here dating back to around 1974-75, from the second owners, who sold it in 2008. This is the Original Oregon Blue plate that was put on the car in 1968. There is only one blue plate, the other one was stolen, and in Oregon you have to have 2 plates, the car comes with Oregon Tree Plates, that were issued to it. In the pictures you will see another set of blue plates on it, they do not go with the car, just put them on for a show that I went to over the weekend for a vintage look and for the photos as well to give it a period look. Took my eyes off the road for a split second to show you the odometer is working, gas gauge works, speedometer works, temp gauge is not working. Factory Cougar AM/8 Track Tape Radio, I can here it turn on, but can't get any radio channels, have not tried the tape player, anyone have a 8 track? Carpet was installed about 3 months ago, you can get items like this from West Coast Classic Cougar here on the West Coast. This is a simple Refrigerator Magnet, that I got from Habitat for Humanity, you probably have hanging a paper up on your fridge. Anyways, took it down the whole car and it you will see sticks all over the car. Even the area, on the drivers quarter, were you can see some bondo, it sticks there, pretty minor repair. Sorry for so many pictures for this darn magnet, but wanted to let you see how solid this car is. Bottom of the battery Box is rusted and needs a minor repair. This is the sequential turnsignal box for the rear lights, it makes a buzzing noise when the turn signals on, these are reproduced now, or a used one. This is something you don't see often, the factory down tube off the air cleaner snorkel, still on the engine.
