Vehicle Detail
Well, I’ve finally lost interest in this project and have decided to put it up for sale. I purchased this Corvair about 12 years ago as an incentive for my oldest son to do well in school, the old “we’ll restore this car together and if you keep your grades up it will be yours when you turn 16” routine. In hind sight I’m really not shocked that a ’62 Monza convertible didn’t incentivize him the way I had hoped. Anyway, I’ve been toying around with this car for too long and would like to see it go to someone who could finish it up right. This is a 1962 Monza convertible with front and rear suspension out of a ’64 coupe, so it has the transverse leaf. The engine is a ’68 110 with 140 heads. The car was originally a manual shift car, but someone had removed the shifter linkage and clutch pedal and filled in the hole in the floor where the shifter goes before I got it. I had a ’64 auto coupe that became the drivetrain donor so I made this an automatic. The car is originally from Tennessee and was almost rust free when I bought it. A small section of floor under the front seats was replaced and a new truck bottom installed at some point, but that appears to be the only rust repair on the car. This truly is a solid Corvair convertible. I had a new fiberglass nose piece installed when I had the car painted, but this was because of some minor collision damage not rust. I’ll try to list all that I’ve done to this car, but it has been twelve years that I’ve been working on it so I’m sure I’ll forget something. I never intended for this to be a show car, but I am a purist and have kept it as original as possible. All parts are from Clarks. - New brakes all around including all hardware, wheel cylinders, shoes.- New black carpet- New weather stripping all around (some not installed yet)- Resealed engine with Viton seals.- New stinger exhaust (sounds nice)- New coil springs and shocks- New suspension bushings (fronts not installed yet)- Electric fuel pump (wasn’t running well a few years ago and I thought it might be fuel related – turned out to be a bad coil). New mechanicalpump installed but not connected.- New coil and Pertronix electronic ignition.- Rebuilt primary carbs, rebuilt secondary replacements from Clarks.- Installed oil pressure and temperature gauges. I also have boxes of parts to go with this car, some new some used. The car needs to have the interior finished. I have new black front seat covers from Clarks but have not yet ordered the door panels. I wasn’t sure if I wanted the interior to be black or red (original) so I’ve held off on buying any more interior parts. The transmission slips a bit when shifting, but it has done this for years and hasn’t gotten any worse. There is a transmission leak, I believe the shifter cable is the culprit, looks like the sheathing got chaffed, but I haven’t spent a lot of time trying to track it down, I just add fluid when necessary. The right front ball joint is sloppy, I bought four new ones but haven’t installed them yet. On Jul-16-10 at 10:12:58 PDT, seller added the following information: I just put the top up for the first time this year and noticed a small tear where the top had been folded. I've added a picture of the top as well as a couple of interior shots.
