Most likely I will have answered any questions you have below, if not don't hesitate to contact me. I'd be happy to discuss the car with bidders over the phone or show you the car in person. Paypal is NOT accepted for payment, cash in person, bank wire transfer, or even a personal check is fine. However if you pay by personal check the car will not be shipped until your check clears your bank. Up for auction is a numbers matching '71 Pontiac GTO, it has been stored most of the last twenty or so years by the previous owner. The car runs and drives excellent overall and I have probably put easily 500 miles on it in all kinds of driving so far this spring. The car looks great from a distance and has a pretty decent interior. It is a 300 horsepower 400 cubic inch 4 barrel carb with a TH400 automatic on the floor. Numbers match, even the carb, only incorrect mechanical items I could find were the alternator and a dual point distibutor. I even have the original Protecto Plate. This is a really neat and fun driver, sadly the last owner did not store it properly and it is rusty. Below I will describe in detail everything I know about the car. It would make a cool summer driver and a great restoration project when you are ready for it. Mechanical. Again, it is a mostly original numbers matching car, YS code 400 block, big valve number 96 heads, even the correct 7041264 Quadrajet is still in place. It starts right up and runs extremely well. The choke was wired shut when I got it so it takes a bit to warm up, but once it is warmed up it runs excellent, very powerful and no smoke, ticks, or knocks, it simply runs great. I was told the engine was rebuilt before the car was put in storage and only has around 20k on it, but I have no papers to prove this. I tend to believe this as it runs great. The transmission shifts well and the fluid is clean. I think it would be a wise choice to change all of the filters and fuids in the car, as only the oil was changed during storage as far as I know. The rear axle appears to be the original 3.23 open axle. It has factory power disc brakes and power steering, the brakes are great and it steers and handles very well. At one point someone put station wagon springs in the rear and it rides rough in the back, not intolerable, but rough. It would look and ride a lot better with new rear springs. There are no fluids leaking enough to drip on the ground, although there is some seapage here and there on the engine, valve cover gaskets for example. Again, nothing is hitting the ground, and in 500 miles I have not had to add anything. The exhaust is quiet, tires are like new, great tread and not dry rotted. When the aftermarket wheels were installed the last owner reused the Rally II style lugnuts, this would be the only thing that would make me reluctant about driving it anywhere. they have not loosened up on me, but it would concern me on a 1000 mile roadtrip on the highway. Heat, lights, and wipers all work great. A/C has no belt and I'm sure needs service. Interior. The interior is pretty good overall, the door panels are very nice front and rear. The headliner is also very nice. The passengers and rear seats are in very good condition and original, the drivers seat has typical wear and should be recovered. The carpet is fair but I'd replace it, console and lid are pretty nice, the dash pad is obviously cracked pretty good and needs replacement. The dash bezel has been cut for the tape deck, on the plus side the deck works good for tapes, antenna is not hooked up though, so tapes only. All of the gauges work, aftermarket ones and stock, excluding the speedo needle which broke off, odometer still works, also the two old gauges in the dash next to the radio were disconnected when the newer gauges below the dash were installed. The interior could be spruced up and looking great very easily, and looks pretty decent as is. Body. The body needs a lot of work, the worst part is the trunk floor, it is essentially shot. I would plan to completely replace the trunk floor at some point. The interior floors have some rust here and there, but absolutely nothing like the trunk floor. You can pound on the interior floors from above and not put your hand through. the rear seat area under the lower cushion is also very solid with no holes I could see. Assume there will be some floor patching, especially on the drivers front. The frame has a lot of surface rust and one area under the pasengers side cowl that will need to be patched. I don't think it is all that bad, but I have lived in the midwest all of my life, and a lot of them look or looked like this at one point. It is fixable, and I feel safe driving it. The rockers look decent overall, though I have not had the moldings off to check behind. The roof looks pretty decent, though there is one spot at least at the base of the rear window that will need some work when the vinyl top is replaced. The front endura bumper is nice, the rear chrome bumper is very nice. All of the other panels will need work or replacement. I think full quarters should be installed in the rear, though a person could get by with partial quarters if they wanted to cut corners. The front fenders are probably fixable, but they do have filler in them, not just in the bottoms but other places as well. I think the car had bodyside moldings at one point and when they were removed they used filler to cover the holes. The doors and trunk lid are shot, no point in trying to fix them. The hood is typical for these cars, some rust in the passengers rear corner, not very much, and a fair amount on the leading edge of the hood. The car is Castilion Bronze and probably the perfect color for hiding the rust, people still give me thumbs up and say nice car, it turns heads. But it needs a lot of bodywork. Check out the link below for 70 or so photos. http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/chaosjr/71%20gto/?start=60 I can't emphasize enough that it needs a lot of bodywork, BUT it is a numbers matching GTO, and it drives and runs quite well, with a carb kit and some rear springs, and some different lugnuts you would have a great daily driver that you don't have to worry about scratches, etc. That could be restored later as one gathers the parts to do it. My reserve reflects the work it needs as well as the potential it has, I feel it is very realistic, but I have too many projects and something has to go. I will entertain buy it now options as well. Again, feel free to ask any questions if I missed something, I can get more photos if needed, and I don't mind discussing the car via phone or in person. Good luck and happy bidding. On May-10-10 at 07:27:18 PDT, seller added the following information: I wanted to add that over the weekend I removed the wire that was holding the choke open. The choke is working properly and the car now runs very well cold and warms up much quicker. On Jun-03-10 at 09:14:01 PDT, seller added the following information: I replaced the rear springs yesterday with new parts. The car now sits correctly and rides much better. I will add a few updated pics to the phototbucket link hopefully later today or tomorrow of how it looks with the new springs.
