Here is an "AS TRADED" vehicle that needs work on the transmission. It has an unusual problem that we will try to explain in detail later in the listing.
This is a 1998 Mercury Sable LS sedan with a low 80,000 miles. This is well below average for a 98 model. The exterior is Dark Satin Green Metallic and is not too bad. The paint could use a buffing, and there are various scrapes/dings. Both headlamp capsules are "cloudy", but this problem can be fixed with a $20 kit for the auto parts store. These kits restore the lamps to clarity and can be done by most folks with average skills.
The interior is Tan leather and has potential to clean up very well. The upholstery and carpets are soiled, but an afternoon with some foam leather and carpet cleaner will work wonders. The windows/locks/power seat/radio and heater all work fine. The leather wrapped steering wheel is showing wear, a cover will fix that in a jiffy.
The engine is a 3.0 fuel injected V6 driving the front wheels through a automatic transaxle. The engine seems to run fine and starts right up. It may need a battery soon, the winter weather zapped the power and it needed to be jump started recently.
Ok, here is the transmission problem. When the car is placed in drive and driven, it shifts fine until you make the first stop. When accelerating, the engine will just rev up and the car does not move. If you return the shift selector to drive, the car will move and again shift correctly through all the gears. This problem keeps repeating itself, so there is an obvious problem here. While the car IS driveable, that transmission may eventually decide not to engage and you will be stranded. We would recommend using a tow dolly to remove this Sable unless you have some confidence and feel lucky. If you are a Ford or transmission tech, this may be a problem you may have seen and are familiar with the repair. If this is the case, fix this problem and you will have a low mileage nice sedan.
This Sable does have a valid NJ inspection sticker good through 8/2011 and no warning lights are illuminated on the dash as of this listing being written.
All tires are matching and have approx 5/32" to 8/32" treadwear remaining. They are mounted on the factory alloy rims that are still in good shape.
We DID NOT send this Sable through our shop for any services or evaluation and this description is based on a visual inspection and test drive.
It was not detailed, just washed and vacuumed for the photos.
