Vehicle Detail
1962 Ford F-100 PickUp Truck Unibody Design. Here is the story about this truck... I have owned this truck for almost 5 years. When I purchased the vehicle I was told the engine and automatic transmission were out of a 1972 Mustang and is a 302 V8. It also had a 80's GM Stearing Column and a hot rod stearing wheel. It also had a hack job on the gearbox to make it convert from that column to the gearbox and transmission. The suspension, springs, and shocks were simply shot and nearly impossible to drive anywhere safely. The motor ran, but not very well and the heater core and heater unit were in bad repair with much of the electircal system being ruined from the jokers who were converting to something else. It appears to have had a paint job in the past and looks to be the same basic color as original paint. My Restoration efforts thus far... (I have all documentation that can validate all work performed below as I had a professional company perform ALL work) Since the original 6-cyl engine and 3 on the tree column and transmission were missing, I decided to keep the V-8 and automatic tranny in the vehicle. However, I needed a more original appearance inside and functionality needed to be safe. I purchased a used 1965 F-100 automatic Steering Column, Steering Wheel and Gear Box to replace the hack job and was installed successfully and linked to the 1972 c-4 transmission. I also got a very nice used heater unit and working core to replace as factory original. The wiring harness needed completely replaced as the electrical was not in working order. The complete new wiring harness will allow for customization with new fuze box and potential for power windows and stereo upgrades, etc. Once the electrical system was restored back to complete working order, I began to have the platform of the vehicle completely overhauled to original specs and working order. This included finding some N.O.S. front springs, purchasing all new king pins, wheel bearings, oil seals, shackles, bushings, shocks, and all related hardware for both the front and rear suspensions. The rear springs could not be found at the time, so I had them re-arched,a leaf added and a spacer for additional strength and height in the rear. The truck was sent to a collision center to verify the frame was completely straight for restoration and it was confirmed and measured square. I then addressed the poor running engine with a complete carb rebuild and rejet for proper volumes. The engine got a tune-up with new plugs and wires and installed a new electronic ignition and distributor to upgrade the old points and condensor system vacuum system. This allowed for the truck to run very smoothly and has every since. After about $10K in labor/parts... (Again have documentation/receipts) I decided to give it a break and drive it a bit through winter, used it to move, and generally just enjoy it even though it needed much more cosmetic work and some body structural left. The truck runs great and drives great as of today. I drove it through the entire winter in 2007 & 2008 and misc times throughout since then and drive it around to keep everything working. I would trust it out of state if I had an escort in case of any break downs, but I would recommend a trailer for anything over a couple hundred miles by yourself. Here is what is needed... It badly needs the body removed from the frame and the floor in front of the bench seat to the begining of the firewall cut out and replaced with all new sheet metal. I have some of this already bought and ready for the job to be done. I have the left and right side reproduction floor sheet metal from Carolina Classics and I also have the large metal support beams from Dennis Carpenter's that attach to the frame and the body and extend to the center of the truck under the floorboards. These are the major expense pieces of the materials for the job. There are two smaller supports that are available from Dennis Carpenter that would be needed along with some rubber body spacers, but then its about the know-how and time to complete the job. In addition, the truck needs new rocker and side step panels that should be installed as well and the platform of the vehicle would be less then 5 years old completed. I have some decent pictures showing the bad spots on the truck as well as I want whoever buys it to have full disclosure and all the facts so they feel good about what they are getting. This is still very much a project truck, but I never see these unibody 1961-1963 Trucks around. According to the old folks around here, the unibody was a poor design. Hence, Ford went back to a seperate bed and cab in 1964 and the twin I-Beam in 1965 helped the tough ride. Anyway, with the truck you get the parts mentioned above as well as good used interior door panels and an extra repaired heater core originally out of the truck. the one inside now, is a good used one that came with the heater unit out of the same body style truck. You will also get some misc parts and nobs along with a good used original parking brake that needs installed. The extra parts alone I am selling with the truck would probably sell for about $750 retail, but check it out to see for yourself. Buyer is responsible for all costs related to shipping the vehicle. email me via ebay for any other questions or any more information you would like about this truck.
