Vehicle Detail
Due to relocation, I am selling my 1986 Subaru Brat. I purchased this vehicle approximately 17 months ago on eBay, and have been using it as my daily driver since. It's a very solid example both mechanically and bodywise, and has been maintained to a high standard. Mileage (believed to be accurate) is low for the age of the vehicle, it has some desriable upgrades, and I understand that I am only the third owner. A large supply of spare parts is included as part of the auction. Overall, its condition is very good - the interior is complete and very clean, and there is no structural rust that I am aware of (the bed floor, rear wheelarches, and rocker panels are solid, which are the usual rust traps on these vehicles). The tops, windscreen, and windows seal well with no apparent leaks or wind noise. Chrome trim around the bed is complete and in very good condition for the age. The body is overall very straight, but there are a couple of small shopping-cart dings. The previous owner upgraded the stereo to a Pioneer DEH-1700 AM/FM/CD unit. Virginia state inspection is current through September of this year. When I got the car, it had just over 117,000 miles on the odometer. After driving it for a few weeks, it became apparent that some mileage-related maintenance was necessary. To that end, the following were replaced over time using new parts: Electrical system: new alternator. Ignition system: coil, distributor cap, rotor, distributor pickup module, spark plugs, and plug wires. Drivetrain: both front CV axles, clutch, and clutch cable. Synchros are good on all four forward gears, and both high- and low-range work as they should in 4WD. Suspension: KYB shocks at the rear; Monroe struts and new OEM coil springs at the front. Fuel system: replaced fuel filters and had carburettor rebuilt. Brakes: new master cylinder, pads, and shoes. Cooling system: new thermostat, radiator (the original one developed a pinhole leak), and radiator cap. In the time that I have owned this car, it has never been overheated. Emissions: replaced PCV and EGR valves. Front exhaust was replaced with a new one, which included a catalytic convertor. Being classed as a light truck built to Federal emissions standards, this vehicle is not equipped with an oxygen sensor. Tires: tires are four matching Cornell 185/70R13 all-season radials with approximately 6000 miles on them. There is also a matching full-sized spare (donut spare shown in pictures) that is included. Interior: upgraded the seats that it came with to leather seats from a 1999 Outback wagon; there are no rips or tears in the seats. Driver's seat is manually height-adjustable, but they are are not power-adjustable. Seats contain seat heaters, but are not wired in; OEM switches from the Outback for the seats are included. Exterior: upgraded lights (apart from headlamps) to LED units; flasher relay was also replaced with an electronic unit, so the turn signals and emergency flashers work as they should. Hella 500 driving-beam spotlamps were added to the rollbar as replacements for the generic spotlamps that it came with. As for the included spare parts, there are a lot of them - some came with it when I bought it, some are ones that I have acquired since purchasing it. I don't have space here to provide a full listing, but as a rough guide the following are included: Exterior: front pushbar; this was actually on the vehicle when I got it, but was removed when the CV axles and struts and springs were replaced and I just never got around to putting it back on. Hood and passenger-side front fender (would need to be painted to match) in good condition. Headlights (with bracketry) and taillamps in good condition. Windscreen, rear window, both side windows, and T-tops in good condition. Interior: I don't want to say that I have every interior panel, but it's pretty close - the only one that I think is missing is the one that covers the rear bulkhead, and they are color-matched. The cloth seats and one stock cloth/vinyl seat are also included. Miscellaneous bits & pieces: heater core, alternator, trim pieces, A/C evaporator, fans (A/C and main fan), etc. There isn't really anything I'm aware of that this car needs immediately to be a serviceable daily driver, but I will mention the paint. The previous owner had it repainted, and it appears as though there are some areas that weren't prepped as well as they could have been. This has led to some paint peel, which will require attention. There is no rust in the areas that have peeled, but it would be better to address it sooner rather than later - Brats in good condition are getting harder and harder to find. One word about the air-conditioning: the previous owner started in on adding air-conditioning to this car, which did not originally have it. The compressor, lines, and fan are installed, but the evaporator is not, so the system is currently non-functional. However, the evaporator is included with the spares. Frankly, with the roofs out, I never felt a need for it, but do need to mention that it would require finishing off to be operational. As I have received a couple of enquiries regarding the title: yes, I am in possession of the VA title for this car, which is clean and clear. So there you have it - it's basically a sound, solid, reliable runner in good, ready-to-go shape. Thanks for checking the auction out, and best of luck with your bidding! Payment terms are by check, money order, or cashier's check; I do not accept Paypal or similar methods of online payment. Payment in full is due within 5 days of auction close. Spares are to be collected with the vehicle by the winning bidder. Actual mileage at time of sale/collection will be higher as this is my daily driver. While I have done my best to represent the vehicle fairly, it is a 24-year-old car and thus is being sold in as-is condition. Should you have any pre-bid questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
