Vehicle Detail
Around 10 years ago the original owner of this truck passed away and left the truck to his son. However his son did not want the truck so I purchased it from him. At that time I had access to a storage facility so drove the truck to store it in a building. This spring the property where I stored the truck was sold so I had to bring the truck home. I am a mechanic and had stored the truck properly to begin with so all I had to do was prep the truck to bring it home. At home I decided to make sure the truck was safe and drivable so here is what I did. First I performed a complete inspection. From the inspection I found some issues then fixed everything I found. I removed all the brake wheel cylinders and the brake master cylinder. I flushed all the brake lines and made sure all brake lines and hoses in good condition. I cleaned and serviced all brake hardware. I cleaned and serviced all the park brake hardware. I replaced the front brake shoes. I installed new wheel cylinders and a new master cylinder then bled the system. I cleaned, inspected and repacked the wheel bearings and installed new wheel seals. I made sure everything adjusted properly and now the brake system works 100% perfectly. I changed the oil and filter. Then I ran an engine cleaner through the engine. Then changed the oil and filter again. I greased everything that could be greased and lubed all doors locks and hinges etc. The water pump had started to leak so I replaced the water pump and every hose in the cooling system including rad hoses, heater hoses and transmission cooler hoses. I removed the radiator and had it gone through. I flushed the entire cooling system using a quality cleaner and then fresh water flushed it and filled it with the proper amount of long life coolant and installed a system additive. Then I pressure tested the system to make sure no other leaks and replaced the radiator cap. The exhaust system was poor so I managed to source a new exhaust system and replaced everything except for the manifolds. I removed the manifolds, cleaned and painted them with high heat satin black manifold paint. I also painted the cross over pipe with the same paint. The exhaust system is a nice clean install with everything lined up perfectly. I painted everything from the manifold back with high heat silver exhaust paint. I performed an ignition tune-up which consisted of replacing the cap, rotor, points, condenser, spark plug wires, spark plugs and adjusting dwell and timing then adjusting carb idle and mixture. It starts and runs like a charm. I cleaned and flushed the fuel tank, lines and carb then replaced the rubber fuel hose at the fuel pump. I installed a new battery and replaced the negative and positive cables to the battery. The transmission fluid was very clean looking but I removed the pan and inspected inside the transmission anyway. I found the inside of the transmission extremely clean. It has a cleanable filter screen which looked perfect so I left it alone. I resealed the transmission pan then flushed the entire transmission using the proper type “A” fluid called for in this transmission. The transmission engages and shifts perfectly. The differential fluid looked pretty good and there was no metal in it however, I ran a cleaner through the differential anyway then flushed it and filled it with new fluid. All the lights were working but I took them apart anyway, cleaned all the sockets and fixtures then installed new bulbs. There is a bit of rust coming out in a few spots (see pics) but not very much. The truck has been garage parked most of its life and has a wooden canopy on it so the box bed is in incredible condition. I was going to remove the wooden canopy (it unbolts into pieces) however it’s actually very well made and in good condition so I have left it on the truck. I even have the original owner’s manual in the glove box. I have had the truck out for a few drives and found it drives very nicely. There is no reason I can see why it could not be driven across the country!
