Vehicle Detail
Here's the story. I used to play golf in the late 80s and sometimes I showed up in my 68 Camaro and one of our occasional players would tell me that he had a GTO stored away in his garage at home, he said it was a 455 and had not run for years. I offered to check it out and maybe get it running for him but he never took me up on it. The years passed and I sometimes saw him on the course and asked about the GTO, but he never tried to start it. One day in 2000 he got in touch with me and said he was moving away and could not take the car because he did not have storage, and he wondered if I would be interested in buying it. I decided to drop by and take a look. My golfing buddy said that his father had bought it from the original owner's mother, the story was that a young man from the neighborhood serving in Viet Nam ordered the car while still deployed in 1969, sadly, he was killed in action and his mother kept the car in his memory, driving it over the next dozen years or so until she sold it to my golfing buddy's dad who patched up the minor rust issues and painted it Polar White instead of the original Pepper Green. I was leery but bought the car because it was really straight and looked original although I did not think it was a real Judge because every other GTO you see has Judge stickers on it, plus the seller insisted it had a 455. I took it home, cleaned out all the fluids, replaced a few rotten brake items, added a battery, alternator, and other minor parts then fired it up and it ran fine. Sure enough, a few months later when I ordered the PHS package it turned out to be a real GTO Judge. 5 years after I bought it, I pulled out the rear seat for some cleaning and found the original build sheet stating it was ordered through G.M. Overseas Distributors making the tragic Viet Nam story sound more believable. So what we have is an unrestored, nearly 100% original, unmolested, numbers matching, PHS documented, 1970 GTO Judge - I use it as a reference when I am trying to figure out how GTOs from that era were originally built. Standard equipment includes 366 Horsepower, Ram Air III V-8, standard three-speed heavy-duty manual transmission, front/rear sway bars, Hurst shifter T-handle, 3.55 ten-bolt rear, Rally II wheels, blacked out grille, airfoil, front air dam, nightglow stripes and Judge decals. Optional equipment includes 8-track, tinted side windows, Safe-T-Track, Radio and Tach. Our soldier was very judicious with ordering, keeping the costs down to the bare minimum Judge package. No power anything, no AC, no discs, not even a 4-speed, nothing but pure lean muscle. One of a few dozen built with 3-speed, also one of a few dozen with flat black rear spoiler. It looks to have all original suspension, drivetrain, interior, maybe even all glass plus all underhood fully functional Ram Air equipment, even the heat riser stuff. I did replace the rotten original exhaust system with a Flowmaster setup and does it ever sound sweet. There are some tiny rust holes in the trunk, they were there when I bought it in 2000 and have not spread. The radiator mount under the battery shows the most age, I added a brace underneath where it is thin. There are a few bubbles here and there as you might expect on a 40 year old car but nothing serious. The paint shines but is 25+ years old and weathered plus the decals are fading. It is the perfect 20-footer, turns every head, needs nothing or needs everything, depending upon your perspective. I like 'em original. I will add more pics over time. I do not expect it to sell in today's economy but I intend to improve it over time, replacing the few remaining incorrect parts, and make it more appealing. I think the miles are right, I have known the car for 20+ years. Alloy wheels shown in some photos are NOT INCLUDED, you will get the original 14 inch Pontiac rallys with new redline repro F70 tires and, for some reason, factory trim rings. Let me know what you want to know. On Jun-04-10 at 17:06:50 PDT, seller added the following information: Hear it running: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSo-Wp_l448
