Vehicle Detail
1948 Austin A40 Devon 4 dr sedan, 1 ONE family owned since new. This car has been in Palm Beach, Florida since new and owned by the same family. Car is running, driving and registered at present, has many highs and lows listed to follow. THE GOOD ; EVERYTHING works including the trafficators, all lights, gauges, etc. Drives OK, probably has never been above 50 MPH in its life. Car is complete including the hubcaps, spare tire and rim, all trim, etc. Sunroof works, chrome is decent, front bumper and minor trim have been replated at some time past, glass is all good- windows all work. Steering wheel and dash plastics are excellent for their age, horn button especially..Car has a heater but hasnt been connected since new ( not needed in Florida) Recent new battery, fuel system flushed, fuel pump rebuilt, oil change @ filter ,chassis lubed. Minor running adjustments, car runs well. Brakes OK, hydro- mechanicals all works, could be improved- but still safe. Interior is good, a strange electric blue color vynil similar to Chrysler products in the 60's, seats and door panels are good, small wear on drivers lower door carpet kick panel, otherwise all intact, could use cleaned from long storage. THE BAD ; Tires are bias plys and maybe ?? 20+ years old, they hold air and have a suprisingly smooth ride, but should be changed for safety. All body seals are old, windshield seal is OK, windshield chrome is good, door and weatherseals of rubber are hard with age. Car was always stored in a wooden garage " off season " in Florida thru the summer months when the family was away- there was and are rust issues from humidity ; the storage was @ 300 yards from the ocean. Third gear makes noise when under load- a moaning sound comes from the gearbox then goes away after small mileage- problem is internal- the other gears make NO NOISE, third works, synchros work, does NOT jump out of gear and only third has a noise. THE UGLY There is body rust- on top of the car- its life near the ocean has given the car typical Florida rust on the grille area, near the sunroof, on the top of the right rear fender. There is a dent in the RF hood and RF door where a small flagpole fell on the car, small dents but seen. The bottom grille has a missing tooth. The car had an amateur restoration in the late 80's / early 90"s( not sure) and the paint is Ok from 10ft., uniform in color but tired.., the electric blue vynil interior was replaced/ redone at this time. This is a decent driver car, could use work but can be driven for fun while improved...
