Vehicle Detail
1970 Triumph Bonneville T120R. Numbers matching; serial number ED51444. Clear MA Title. One family owner with 6983 miles. Manufactured on May 20, 1970, held in inventory until July 31, 1970 and shipped to the Triumph Corporation distribution facility in Baltimore MD August 30, 1970. It was then sold by Frank Marmos Triumph in New Jersey. I acquired this Bonneville with the intent of doing a serious restoration. Even though the 1970 model year saw record production, most were chopped and bobbed, as Triumphs were plentiful and cheap for the longest time. Finding one today with the majority of its original parts, low mileage and one owner is a rarity. Another opportunity emerged for me, so this restoration project is now a chance for someone else. The bike’s status: This machine is being sold as a non-running project. The wiring loom has been modified from stock and the owner’s son, pulled the head off to inspect a worn valve guide, as the machine was smoking on one cylinder. He did not reassemble the head and misplaced the ignition wires. The Good News: He made no attempt to try and restart the machine and I have inspected and finished reassembling the head. When I engaged in this project, I sent the original-paint tank and a spare set of fenders to Ace Classics in the UK. The paint work is spot on, representing a limited number of marque experts for refinishing around the world. The machine is shown with the tank on the frame and off the frame. It demonstrates how the top-of-the-range Bonneville pops with the correct Astral Red and Silver Sheen color scheme, while sporting the original fenders on the motorcycle in contrast. The machine features matching case numbers, and Dunlop rims and exhaust. This production unit has the preferred plunger shifting mechanism in the transmission. Surprisingly, it has the original DOT required tank side reflectors. The headlight shell has a Smith Warner oil pressure gauge in place of the Smiths ammeter. It also has an aftermarket seat and T140 bars. A new exhaust system is included with the listing. The 1970 model year is regarded by some as the apex of the dry frame generation of big twins. It has many unique features that make it a practical classic, such as UNF or SAE specification nuts and bolts instead of the Whitworth standard thread common to many classic British motorcycles. Not to mention a useful grab rail, crankcase breathing system that works pretty well, removable front engine mounting plates, brakes that really stop, nitrided camshafts along with a host of other small but meaningful production upgrades. If you are looking for a representative example of a T120R that has not been modified to death with limited owner history and modest mileage, this may be work a look.
