Vehicle Detail
1982 MAICO 490 Alpha 1 . For the discriminating buyer / collector. I restored this bike over ten years ago and with mixed emotions must let it go. The bike was purchased from its original owner in Portland Washington. It had very little time on it riding in the high desert as you can see. The motor is tight, idles, and runs great, pulls super strong/smooth and also shifts as it should. A truly fine example of Maico’s glory days and no it’s not an 81 model, but it isn’t 9k either. During the resto I re-used all the original Maico parts including: · The wheel sets are completely original factory Maico (Akront green label) in the gold anodizing nobody seems to be able to replicate. New Michelin S12/M12 tires and tubes were also installed. · Maico handle bars, foot pegs and yes the original kick stand, etc.. · The original factory Magura dog-leg levers/throttle were reused with new grips installed. · I replaced the Corta-cossa rear shock with a like new $900.00 Ohlin’s model. · The original pipe and silencer were blasted then painted and are beautiful with no dents. · The Forks were striped of paint, disassembled cleaned, inspected and new seals installed. They could be repainted as factory but I liked the bare aluminum look. · The Frame and swing arm were sand blasted and painted Maico red. New items also included: o New Michelin S12/M12 tires and tubes were also installed. o I did replace both fenders were but the factory number plate, gas tank, side panels and seat cover were all nice enough to reuse! o I replaced the Corta-cossa rear shock with a like new $900.00 Ohlin’s model o The original Bing 54 was gone thru and a new air filter added. And yes Maico had a few issues with geometry on their first attempt at a single rear shock. But, prior to restoring this bike and after installing the new Ohlins rear shock I rode the bike several times. I can assure you this machine tracks straight and true, sucks up any obstacle in its path and has the finest motor ever produced on a big bore 2-stroke. It’s power delivery is smooth and linear yet ridiculously fast. So, yes this bike was built as a show bike but could be raced if you wanted to As you can see there was a substantial amount of time and money spent on this bike. It’s worthy to place in a game room or take it out and race it. Your call! The pictures speak for themselves, it’s really show quality and super clean. This bike was built as a show bike but could be raced if you wanted to. Sorry no warranty or title but I will generate a bill of sale for you. Bike is also being offered locally. Bike to be picked up by the shipper of your choice, I can recommend a few guys I’ve used. I’ve done my best to describe this Maico’s condition. Additional pictures upon request. There is a very low reserve on this bike. Do not miss out on this one.
