Vehicle Detail
1974 MAICO 440 - 4-Speed. Race season is fast approaching so I recently went back through this bike and added an HPI ignition and a chain tensioner. I completed the build on this bike last summer and everyone loved it. We’re fondly referring to it as Frankenstein since it’s a monster and constructed out of several bikes and the best pieces & parts I had available. The 1974 440 motor S/N# U441215 and the frame is a 1974 250 S/N# 391586. Build details, specifications: · I built the wheels out of original Maico DID rims that were then powder coated black, used Buchannan Stainless steel spokes & nipples with new wheel bearings. · NEW inner tubes, rim locks and Michelin S12 rear and M12 front tires finished it off. · New vintage Maico handlebars / retro maico cross bar pad were used with NEW modern Magura dog-leg levers/throttle and NEW vintage surgical rubber gripsand a NEW likk switch. · All NEW control cables were installed. · NEW Mikuni VM 36 Round slide replaced the original Bing 54 and a K&N air filter. · NEW 14mm compression release was installed for easier starting. · NEW HPI electronic ignition was installed and makes starting much simpler. · NEW gold chain and sprockets were installed. · The frame and swing arm were powder coated metallic silver There’s lots vintage go-fast parts including: · Wheel-Smith foot pegs and rear brake stay · KONI Poppy shocks yes (original rebuildable Poppy’s) . · NEW Circle (F) pipe with built in silencer The build also includes: · A hand built chain tensioner due to the large distance between the counter sprocket and the swing arm pivot. · Several custom fabricated pieces & parts all went together nicely including the 76 plastic side panels and larger capacity 76 aluminum tank. · A NEW gold chain and sprockets were installed. · Factory number plates / numbers were added for the right retro look. · Every piece was disassembled, cleaned, painted or polished, and then reassembled. · All new bolting hardware was installed using primarily stainless steel washers, bolts and nyloc nuts. · This bike was built as a Vintage AHRMA motocross racer and not a trailer queen but it easily fits both categories if I say so myself. This bike is incredibly light weight for an open class machine. The motor idles, rev’s and pulls very strong. Clutch is good and the 4-speed tranny shifts as it should. Vented gas cap was replaced due to leakage. What it needs: If it is going to be raced, set-up properly. I rode it around my yard for 20 minutes to make sure everything worked properly. All spokes will need to be checked during initial run in the re-tightened. I would also have the Koni-Poppy shocks rebuilt or simply install modern rear shocks. As you can see there was a substantial amount of time and money spent on this bike. It’s worthy to place in a game room or take it out and race it. Your call! The pictures speak for themselves, it’s really sweet. RACE, SHOW or RIDE. Sorry no warranty or title but I'll create a Bill of sale. Bike is also being offered locally. Bike to be picked up by the shipper of your choice, I can recommend a few guys I’ve used. I’ve done my best to describe this Maico’s condition. Additional pictures and information upon request.
