Our cars are listed to sell in an auction format with $1.00 starting bid and NO RESERVE!!!!! We ask that you please respect our auction and treat this as an auction, please bid the maximum amount you are willing to pay to keep the auction spirit alive. It's hard to find a starting point to describe this impressive automobile. We will start with the back story since this one is extensive. The car was delicately selected by Professor James Carlson of The University Of Tennessee sometime in late 1965 or early 1966. After taking European delivery of a 1964 Bahama Blue Deluxe Beetle just a year earlier he was hooked and was ready to take the next step into a Porsche 912! We have the original 1966 912 sales flyer with the salesman's name hand written on the cover and color chart with the beautiful color of Sandbeige checked off as the color he would have. Professor Carlson being a Professor meticulously hand documented every service on the back cover of the owners manual from 11/14/68 with 32,180 miles until 3/11/87 with 148,960 miles. At this point it appears that age had caught up with James and documentation began to fall off. Apparently he was able to squeak out another 10k miles worth of driving over the next 10 years when his Granddaughter took over possession of the car and started her own handwritten documentation at 158,661 miles on 11/19/99. This documentation makes it to 1-2-11 and 173,713 miles. Roughly around this time a local Porsche enthusiast bought the car from James Granddaughter and immediately went through the brakes and other minor mechanical items and installed an aftermarket set of Webber carburetors. (Original Solex carburetors and air cleaners come with the car) please see pictures. He drove the car a bit but it inevitably found its way sitting in dry storage more than being driven over the next 5 or 6 years until we took possession recently. A few things that make this 912 exceptional: -Original 1966 title has been retained over the years -Original 1966 Tennessee license plate -Original state registration form dated 6/10/66 -Original tax form dated 9/6/66 where tax's were paid on the original purchase price of $4381.21 -Original keys and Porsche stamped leather key pouch -Original Blaupunkt radio -Complete tool kit -Original floor mats -Original battery cover and hold down strap -Original sales brochures -History OF The Porsche flyer with hand calculations on the cover to see if he could swing the cost of the car -Numbers matching engine and gearbox On to the car itself! Mechanically this car is 100% ready to enjoy right off the trailer or drive it home if you wish! As they say "their only original once". It couldn't be more true with this car. It runs and drive flawlessly! Starts right up, no smoke, engine purrs and is extremely quiet. While driving there is plenty of power, steering is tight, brakes are firm and the clutch and gearbox work together with no roaring or grinding. All electrical items such as headlights, tail lights, brake lights and turn signals operate as they should as well as all interior lights, windshield wipers and the never used cigarette lighter. The original Blaupunkt radio is not working and the dimmer switch is a little sticky. The engine and trans are a little wet but nothing out of the ordinary for a survivor of this age. The exterior and chassis are in very good condition but does have plenty of patina and "character". We have only "lightly dusted" this awesome survivor after pulling it from it's cave. All glass is original and in great shape. The car has documentation in April of 1973 of being repainted and both rockers being replaced. We have not been able to identify why the rockers were replaced at such a young age especially here in the Southeast where rust is not an issue. We can only assume the car had possibly been high centered or maybe damage by an automotive lift. There are zero signs the car has ever been in an accident. there is no rust anywhere in the car except for a small spot under the battery tray that can be seen in the pictures and is not into the torsion mount. There are signs of the imperfect body work that was common in the 60's and 70's at the welded splice joints on the rear of the rockers that can be seen in the pictures on both sides. There is absolutely no structural issue and we would personally leave the car as is. The paint is less than stellar but again par for the course as far as 70's paint jobs go. It was repainted in the proper Sandbeige color and the door jambs were also painted. The paint is flaking, peeling etc. and we think it looks awesome! You can see the factory Porsche paint underneath in many areas. The interior in this car is particularly impressive in our eyes! Everything is original and in exceptional condition all the way down to the period correct 3 point add on seat belts. The carpet is in decent shape considering and the seats, door panels, headliner and leather dash are in very good condition! IF you have been waiting for the right Short Wheel Base Car that can be purchased for reasonable money then this is the car. Bid with confidence and this car could be yours but do not hesitate or you will miss out! We have spent many hours servicing and inspecting this car. We have represented as thoroughly and honestly as anyone can but we can always look over minor details on a car of this age. Please feel free to call with any questions, come by and take a look in person or arrange for an independent inspection locally. We would be more than happy to assist with any of the above.
