Vehicle Detail
14.00 Please read the following completely before bidding! I am retiring and unfortunately need to sell my dream car, which I have owned for 9 years. This is a second series, 1949 Plymouth P-17 “Deluxe” Two Door Sedan. The P-17 series sat on a shorter (111”) wheelbase. The Two Door Sedan had a body entirely proprietary to this model, i.e., everything back of the hood and fenders fit this model only. The Two Door Sedan had a factory chop job, and was not only shorter, but about 1½ inches lower, than the rest of the Plymouth line. This is a good running, complete western car which was restored by a retired mechanic about 15 years ago. I had it shipped from Colorado in early 2007. It has been garaged, and has never seen rain or snow. The paint looks nice from a distance, but it has its share of chips, scuffs, and other minor defects. Up to you whether to drive as is or repaint. All chrome is present and good except for the damaged right rocker panel molding (thanks landlady) which I removed – it’s in one of the photos. The floors, rocker panels, etc., are all solid. VIN: ID39593CO. The previous owner (in Colorado) was required to get the vehicle number assigned in order to title this car. Massachusetts title has been in my name since 2007. True mileage unknown. The car runs and drives great, with lots of mid- and upper-range power. It has the optional front anti-roll bar, and I’ve put five Goodyear 195/75R-15 radial truck tires on it. It has a beautiful ride, and handles much better than you would expect from a car this age. Yes, the parking brake works! New clutch and brakes, battery, rebuilt generator, etc., all fairly recently. Lots of spare parts …one chrome bumper (front or rear?), couple of NORS voltage regulators, a used distributor, and more. It is equipped with some nice vintage speed equipment, namely an aluminum Offenhauser dual carburetor intake manifold and Offenhauser dual exhaust manifold, with two Flowmasters resulting in a pleasant, mellow and evocative sound. The only problem with this setup is that whoever assembled the engine topped the intake manifold with a pair of 2-barrel adapters and modern 2-barrel carbs, which of course prevents maximally efficient air flow. Among the many extra parts that come with this car are a couple of original Plymouth carbs, repair parts and a bunch of accelerator linkage parts so that you can make this into a 100% vintage hot rod if you want. The trunk photo shows a wooden jig I made to set up the throttle linkage. Unfortunately, due to some health problems last year I have not completed the carburetor conversion, nor have I been able to give this car the obsessive TLC which is my style. Thus it must go before it starts to deteriorate. The car has not been on the road since late 2014, but it has been started and moved regularly since then. The gas in the tank is 1½ years old. Due to poor stop light visibility I installed a couple of vintage Harley stop lights above the stock tail lights. The original lights now provide tail light and directional signals, and the stop lights are now high enough to be easily visible. I have also installed a kill switch in an inconspicuous but fairly convenient location. The guy who built this car went for a pleated red mohair interior using original seats. It’s all in good shape, with a little fading on the upper seat backrests. It has two sun visors, two front arm rests, dual horns, and 4 lap belts. Its original radio needs repairs. The regraining on the dash is good but not really authentic. It needs: a new trunk lock (NORS comes with car) and a passenger’s door latch and striker (used pieces with car). Vacuum wipers are slow. More than anything else it needs a new owner who will love it as much as I have. This is a unique example of a desirable model in good condition. Obviously it needs some TLC, but it’s 67 years old (as am I), and one important difference between me and the car is that the Plymouth doesn’t need to slow down. Good luck, thanks for reading, and thanks for bidding! Conditions of sale: Car is sold “as-is”, “where-is” (f.o.b. Sudbury, Massachusetts 01776). No warranty, no return!
