BMW started their X5 line with quite a few trims, but the X5 4.6is is a rare treat and a well running one is even more rare. This truck was the fastest production SUV in 2003. If you are looking at this truck, hopefully you are already aware of this. I purchased this last year for the wife who wanted something she could drive on and lightly off road for biking trips with the girls and such. I wanted to get the biggest and and best, but on a budget, and I remembered driving a 4.6IS years ago and how fun it was. Long and short, we picked this up out of CA., it ran alright, but it needed some TLC and maintenance. We drove it home and brought it immediately into our BMW dealer to get the truck worked over. We had a stack of work done, Axles, Transmission filter and fill, Coolant check up, and then finally Valve Guides and timing chain and guides door handles, etc... Lots of little stuff, belts, fans, starter. All the goods so that its completely reliable and ready to hand over to the wife. Total cost of everything was about $13,500, all from the dealer, all guaranteed work. Why dealer, well, because they know these vehicles top to bottom. We have tried independents and small shops in the past with minimal success. I feel that if you are going to buy the car, you should probably be prepared to pay for the maintenance to keep it up correctly. We put some new tires on her as well, just about as big as you can go without any annoying rubbing or noise. These have less than 1000 miles on them. The previous owner pulled the OEM head unit and replaced it with a JVC Unit to get bluetooth connectivity and satellite radio. These work great, but I have the OEM head unit that will come with the truck. Inside the truck is almost flawless, a solid 9 out of 10. A little rub wear on the center console, but nothing horribly noticeable. Dash is flawless, Door panels are in excellent condition, no damage, and tight. We had the dash repaired as the "warm up" lights on the tach were not working. All functions and lights are now working at factory spec. The seats are in excellent condition and all functions work as they should. No cracks or tears, They have been maintained with Zymol since we owned the truck. The seats are heated in the front and rear and the rear seats are powered and move forward and backward as designed. No wierd noises, its solid and tight inside. All lights are LED inside. Outside the paint is in excellent condition and a solid 9 out of 10. There are a few small nicks and chips that have been professionally touched up. Its metallic black and shines like new (see pics). Lights are all in great condition and not cracked or cloudy. This year of X5 did not have angel eyes available, but it does have self leveling Xenon headlights which was the top of what was available at the time. Fogs are clear and functioning properly. Outside parking sensors are all working correctly and accurately. We tracked down some OEM roof bars for putting bikes or skis up top. There is also a tow kit on the truck which we have put a bike rack in, thats probably the most working it should get. Under the hood is a Dinan Cold Air Intake and a high flow air mass meter. Its running stage 2 software as well, something to note before the dealer decides to flash the Controller. :) The truck runs like a top now. Its tight, crisp handling and accelerates like a beast, sounds like a bit of a beast as well on full throttle. Its reliable, comfortable and all of the things that BMW is known for, plus the power that some of the smaller motors dont even come close to. It doesnt disappoint and as our tech noted is probably one of very few 4.6is that is correctly maintained and running at peak performance. Well, after driving this for a few months, the wife is sold on the X5, but she wants a diesel. So the sale of this will be helping to fund her down payment on a 2016 X5 Diesel.
