1973 VW Super Beetle Special Edition “THE SPORTS BUG” Nationally advertised in Newsweek and Time (ad sides included – they are vintage hippy and amusing). Approximately 10,000 were produced in yellow and 10,000 in blue = total of about 20,000. Variations occurred within the Sports Bug run, and this one has been restored to the most appealing: no bumper guards, yellow stripe on the bumpers, matte black everywhere except running boards and radio antenna, Recaro steering wheel and bucket seats (fresh headrests left off, but included). By the way, the original striping was vinyl but this one's stripes are painted. Rebuilt carb and engine. Reupholstered original front seats (a soft cloth, some refer to it as mouse fur. It was a challenge for my upholsterer to find NOS, but he did.New headliner, new carpets, new dash cover, new windshield, new pedals, new tires (including the spare) and fresh paint. When I purchased the car in 1986 from the Porsche dealership in the San Fernando Valley, it was painted pearl white. I later found out from a body man repairing the right front fender that the car was produced in yellow and that it was a Sports Bug. When I decided to return it to original, my research proved him right. Thus, the yellow bug you see here. This Super Beetle Sports Bug is a good daily driver and car-show ready! Currently registered in California and smog-exempt. The odo shows 09800 miles but I suspect that it is 109800. That was the good, here is the bad: No courtesy lights, one poorly fitting Brazilian running board, old trunk liner (new one is $200+) and no speaker (radio works). I have a rear package tray with two speakers in it if you want it. I think I've offered this limited edition at a fair price, but serious offers will be considered.
