Vehicle Detail

In 1979, this Scout was purchased brand-new for $8,727.74 by our buddy's grandfather. When the grandfather passed away, our buddy inherited it & spent a lot of cash tricking it out. Even though he set it up for serious off-road/rock crawling the Scout drives fine on the highway. In fact, when we bought it from our buddy in 2004, we drove it from Angel Fire, New Mexico to our home in Austin, Texas. The Scout was one of several unique vehicles we purchased to use in a film project. Unfortunately, the project fizzled after years of seemingly-endless work. My wife and I recently purchased a 47’ sailboat and will be sailing the ocean blue for the next 4-5 years (God willing). Had we decided to keep the Scout, it would just sit unused & unappreciated. We are auctioning this beautiful beast with NO RESERVE :) We have worked hard to be as comprehensive as possible with this vehicle's description, so please read the listing in its entirety before sending any questions. MechanicalEngine: gasoline V8 International 345 bored 350. Stans headers (601D). As you can see in the photo, the engine is super clean.Transmission: automatic, rebuilt, 727 TorqueFlite w/ B&M transmission cooler/ Mopar Performance deep transmission pan. The original transmission was a 3-speed manual. Carburetor: 4-barrel ThermoQuad. The truck has a high-water snorkel. New starter: the previous starter still functioned but occasionally clicked.Axle-related: Dana 44’s with 4.56:1 gears. Detroit “no spin” locking differential. Dana 44 steel spool. Warn hubs. Rear axle seals redone <100 miles agoB&M shifterFront drive shaft: Tom Woods custom.U-joints: Spicer 297-1XGauges: Autogauge tachometer (8k rpm). The oil pressure, water temperature, & transmission temperature gauges are all made by Autometer. The gas gauge is stuck on "E."Steering: AGR “super pump” power steering/ AGR steering box/ power steering cooler/ new steering linkageBrakes: Rear brake pads replaced <100 miles ago. Line lockers, front and rear. Tires: BM Goodrich 35 x 12.5 R 15 with mud tread. Used very little. Good overall condition.Spare tire: BM Goodrich 35 x 12.5 R 15 with mud tread. Holds air but needs to be replaced due to sidewall cracks. The rim is fine. Suspension: Extensive modifications were made to the suspension. Rancho leaf springs. I do not know how much the truck was lifted, but it's pretty high; my in-laws can't climb in. It is 36.75" from the ground to the threshold of the door. The roll bars make great handles for climbing aboard.Tie rods: custom-built less than 100 miles ago. These are heavy-duty and hold her straight and steady on the highway. The tie rods are 1 1/4" diameter & 5/8" diameter. See photo.Battery: less than one year oldCustom battery retaining barIgnition Control: MSD 6ALED bulbs installed in all signal lights (brake lights, parking lights, turn signals)Kill switch: top secret location. AccessoriesJack: Hi-Lift mounted to the driver’s side fender. The mount allows for a padlock. Winch: Warn HS9500i with steel cableShovel: small shovel mounted to the passenger’s side fender. Pick-ax: full-size pick mounted to the passenger’s side fender.Fuel Can: red, metal, 5-gallon can mounted in the bed. It has a lock ring on the lid.Water Can: tan, plastic, military 5-gallon can mounted in the bed. Extra Jerry-can holder (steel) mounted behind driver's seat.Stereo: installed but non-functioningSpeaker: black Bose exterior speaker mounted under the light bar. I planned on using this speaker with a PA-capable CB radio, but never installed a CB. Heavy speaker wire is installed inside the light bar. Soundbar: mounted above/behind seats. There are no speakers installed in it.Spare parts: see photo.Spare tire holder: Located behind the tailgate. It’s custom, detachable, and heavy-duty: I can jump up & down on it…literally. The spare tire holder locks into the frame. The tire locks onto the tire holder. You must see how it is designed to fully appreciate it!Toolbox: a locking, steel toolbox by Greenlee is welded into the bed. Its position and height makes the box a great rear seat.Floor mats: 2 in the front and 1 in the bedCustom license plate holder incorporated into a removable hitch bar. This set-up was made for ease of operation when using the winch at the rear hitch. LED Spotlights: 4 x 72 watts. When the spotlight bar was fabricated, I mounted the lights under the bar so a kayak or canoe could be carried on top. This is a great set-up. A 4-gang switch box for the spotlights is mounted under the dash. Each switch has an LED light for night use. Locking lug nut on each tire rim. Lug key included.Seat belts: RJS 3-point safety harnesses. We uninstalled the seat belts in Texas because we have only driven the Scout around our ranch. They are easy to install and uninstall; the seatbelt attachments click in to eyebolts behind and beneath the seats. As you can see in the photos, the harnesses have faded in some places. They are still fully functional.Full tank of gas :) BodyHood: diamond plate steel. Door cut-out panels: diamond plate steel Doors: tan half-doors (for Jeep CJ7/CJ8). I always drive with them off. Roll cage: pre-fabricated Smittybuilt with extensive custom mods. The mods were made with thick-walled steel pipe. Top: new tan bikini by BesTop (for TJ Wrangler).Bumpers: custom front & rear. Tow hitches: front and rear. The mount for the Warn winch can occupy either the front or rear hitch receivers. Seats: By BesTop. Tan colored with rear pockets. Relatively new and super clean; no blemishes. Fuel Tank: an “extra-capacity” 33-gallon tank with heavy skid plate.Gator-Guard bedliner sprayed on floor of cab, bed, and on tool box. This vehicle was never exposed to a salty coastal environment. Paint: Fresh paint job using 3 gallons of CPS #AS-4108 Autobahn Hot Rod Black Polyurethane Mix 4:1:1. Body mods and paint were designed to bolster it's "Mad Max" appeal. If you are looking for a stock vehicle with perfect lines, then this truck is not for you.We accidentally forgot to re-install the windshield wipers for the photos. You can see them in the "accessories" photo. NegativesThe dash is cracked in several places. See Photos. This is cosmetic only. The hood vent is cracked in several places. See Photos. This is cosmetic only. The rear passenger taillight lens has a thin crack. See closeup photo.Multiple dents/dings in body panels. See photos. These are mostly on the passenger rear panel. Overall Mechanical Condition This Scout is mechanically sound. It cranks every time. There are no fluids dripping. It is NOT a "project" in any sense of the word. I would feel comfortable allowing my 21-year-old niece to drive it solo coast-to-coast tomorrow. The biggest problem you will have is finding time to answer all of the questions from awestruck passersby at gas stations. Seriously! She demands attention…people get really excited about her look and her sound. A deposit of $500 is due within 24 hours of the end of the auction. This deposit is NOT REFUNDABLE.Full payment is due within 3 business days of the end of the auction. Good destiny & happy bidding! On Feb-26-16 at 09:10:16 PST, seller added the following information: *** Important note: the suspension has Front Shackle Reversal ($$$) and the leaf springs are OVER the axle (for lift). *** Important note: the odometer reads 043848 with the last digit (8) being a different color than the other digits (04384). I thought the different color digit (the last 8) meant tenths of a mile, so I took that reading to mean 4,384.8 miles. That mileage was feasible because the previous owner trailered it to events & the only significant mileage I put on the Scout was the trip from New Mexico to Texas. I just spoke with the previous owner because I thought that number seemed low. He thought it had close to 50k miles when he sold it to us. So, the odometer reading must mean 43k miles, with no "tenths of a mile" on the dial. Sorry for the confusion--that's still super-crazy low miles for a 1979 vehicle.
