Appraised at $42,000.The Classic Car Appraisal Service carefully examined this 1958 Corvette Hardtop Convertible on June 3, 2015 in order to make a determination of its current retail market value. The odometer on this maroon with white coves Corvette shows 97,587 miles. Amenities include, but are not necessarily limited to the following: non-original 283cid/325 V8 engine; Muncie M-22 4-speed transmission with Hurst shifter; mph, fuel temp, oil and amp gauges; tachometer; Maranze AM/FM cassette radio; hard top (missing soft top); and white painted coves. The tires are an older matched set of P235/60SR14 blackwall radials mounted on chrome disc wheels.MECHANICAL: We started this car and drove it a few miles. We found that the newly rebuilt, high performance engine started easily and idled smoothly. The transmission and new clutch work very well and shifts easily, while the brakes pull the car to a straight stop. The steering is smooth, easy and tracks straight down the road. The amp gauge showed charging, while the oil pressure was very good and the temperature was normal, but the tach is not in working order. The new exhaust and aluminum radiator are in excellent condition.EXTERIOR: The exterior physical condition of this vehicle’s fiberglass is fair to good. It appears that both the front and rear fiberglass have been replaced as there are cut lines across the front and rear fenders. It also has an incorrect hood mounted, but the correct original hood is available. The car was repainted maroon from its original white with silver coves many years ago, and it is now just in fair condition. There are many small chips and scrapes all around the car, as well as checking “crazing” paint. The chrome handles and some trim around the car is pitted, and the stainless trim has surface scratches and dings, but the strips on top of the fenders and all the emblems and side chrome was recently replaced and is in new condition. The truck deck strips are good and the rear bumpers have also been rechromed. The chrome on the front of the car has been replaced and is in very good condition except a scratch on the right front bumper. The grill is incorrect, but a new 1958 correct grill is included with the car. windshield has a white “fog” around the edges, but the door glass is very good. All 1958 Corvettes came with a convertible top, with a power top and hard top as options. This car is missing the soft top and has the hard top only. The hard top is in good condition with a newer headliner and its original plexi-glass rear window.INTERIOR: The original red or charcoal vinyl upholstery, as well as the door panels and dash pad, have been replaced with a non-authentic white colored vinyl. It is all in good to very good condition, and the new black carpets are excellent. The dash looks very good, as does the steering wheel and gauges.ENGINE COMPARTMENT: The engine and engine compartment are clean, neat and in very good condition, but is not detailed to “show” condition.CHASSIS: The undercarriage is dirty and oily and has surface rust on the frame and suspensions parts. There also is extra braces welded onto the frame and oil under the rear-end. The exhaust system is in excellent condition. This 1958 Chevrolet Corvette has a new high-performance replacement engine, but has replacement fiberglass and no soft convertible top. It is in fair to good condition. Chevrolet produced 9,168 Corvettes in 1958. We use the Old Cars Price Guide, Barrett-Jackson, Mecum, and RM auction results, and internet offerings including Hemmings website along with our 30-plus years of experience to form our opinion on value. We also consult with collectors, vintage car dealers and marque experts in making these evaluations. Our compensation for this report is not contingent upon the valuation of this vehicle. It is, then, the professional opinion of the Classic Car Appraisal Service that the current retail market value of this vehicle is $42,000 (forty-two thousand dollars).
