Vehicle Detail

1979 Honda CBX SuperSport with 17,827 original miles. I bought this bike in 2009 under the impression it was completely restored and in excellent condition. Cosmetically, the previous owner did some very interesting and visually distinctive things including chroming numerous components and powder coating the wheels and engine. However, he reused the old gaskets on reassembly of the engine which resulted in numerous small leaks. I subsequently had the engine removed, disassembled and reassembled with all new gaskets and O-rings to the tune of over $700 alone for the gaskets. While disassembled, the valves (in excellent condition) were lapped to the head. Pictures of this process are available upon request. The previous owner had removed the air box and put individual air cleaner pods on the bike but did not modify the jets or springs which resulted in the bike not revving past 5000 rpm due to inadequate vacuum to open the stock CV slides. I removed the original carburetors and replaced them with a new set of Keihin CR carbs from Tim’s CBX shop ($2200). The previous owner installed a new DG exhaust system. The tank is in very good condition with very minimal interior rust. The following repairs and modifications have been made: Six Keihin CR carburators $2210 Six K&N air filters $175 Gaskets and O-rings (receipts available) $696 Cam Chain tensioner $65 Cam chain $30 Throttle cabels $40 Stepless screw clamps for the intake manifolds $23 Corbin “Gunfighter” seat http://www.corbin.com/honda/7980cbx.shtml $369 Kuryakyn Turn Signal Mirrors (Pair) $171 -Convex Glass http://www.westendmotorsports.com/kuryakyn-turn-signal-mirrors-pair-brbconvex-glass-p-1425.html There are a few problems: There is a variation in the idle speed that I have not been able to nail down. It probably is a vacuum leak or a sticky slide but I am not sure. (Six carbs!) There is a stutter at wide open throttle that has not been remediated with numerous fuel jet changes. My thoughts are possibly electrical (coils) versus the air jets on the Keihin carbs. These carbs have almost infinite adjustability (these are racing carbs). The paint on the tank is excellent but sometime in the past the front fender has been repainted and is a slight shade off from the tank. The rear deck has also been repainted the correct color but there is some mild fish eyeing in the clear coat. I have tried to show these faults in the pictures but it really is not noticeable unless you put your nose down to it. As far as I know, these are the only problems with this bike and it is otherwise a stunning machine that starts and runs well.
