We welcome and encourage inspections during the listing time frame. 1937 MG TA Tickford Three Position Drophead Coupe Chassis No. TA2758 · Extremely Rare Tickford With Coachwork by Salmons and Sons, Ltd. · One of Only 260 Produced of Which Only 135 are Believed to Survive · Verified by the Tickford and MGCC T Registers · Authentically and Properly Presented Throughout · Formerly Part of a World Class MG & British Car Collection · Desirable Colors & Well-equipped with Accessories · One of the Most Beautiful MG Models Produced · Ideally Suited for Casual Showing, Club Events, and Touring In 1936, MG introduced the first of its famous T-Series sports cars beginning with the TA. The prewar TA firmly established the stylish look of the typical British sports car with its tall, square radiator, wire wheels, cut-down doors, folding windscreen and rear-mounted slab fuel tank and spare tire. Lower and wider than the previous PB, the two-seat TA proved very popular with its more spacious and comfortable cockpit, good handling characteristics and smoother ride. It is estimated that only a mere 260 MG TA series cars were produced in coachbuilt Tickford DHC form. The Tickford three-position drophead coupe body added elegance to the Midget's chassis, suggestive of a scaled down 3 1/2 litre Bentley. According to the Tickford and MGCC T Registers, chassis no. TA2758 was completed at Morris Garage as a rolling chassis on 10 October 1938. It was then delivered to Salmons and Sons Ltd. of Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire for the fitting of its Tickford body No. 4347 and returned to MG for completion on November 16, 1938. This Salmons "job number" was stamped on the back of the interior wooden trim pieces, on the back of the hood irons and on an aluminum strip on the toolbox lid all of which remain on TA2758 to this day, along with all original brass radiator tags and part casting numbers. TA 2758 was registered new on the first of December 1938 to its first caretaker S. Collins of 506 Eastern Street, Ilford, Essex. The registration number, GVW 756 is the original, issued by the licensing office in Chelmsford, Essex. Compared to a standard TA, the front sheet metal appears unchanged, while the doors feature flat tops and roll-up windows. Then there is the lovely, three position padded top with chrome accents. Using functional landau irons, configurable as a coupe, open in Sedanca style, or folded all the way down. Inside, a Tickford's interior is nothing short of opulent-especially when compared to the standard two-seaters. Correct and incredibly complete with original parts, is this uncommon example of the first generation T-Series which was restored in the United Kingdom some time before its export by an American collector in 2007. The gentleman acquired the MG from a Mr. Trevor Symonds while working overseas and had the it shipped to the States, where it became a jewel in his impressive British automobile and motorcycle collection throughout the following years. Painted in a favored analogous blue toned design, the dark accents compliment the folding cloth top and matching leather interior, which remain in beautiful condition - while the walnut garnish rails are elegantly refinished, as is the dash, its Jaeger gauges and Bluemel banjo-style steering wheel. A few paint and cosmetic blemishes are present and can only be expected from years of use. Other styling features include a push-out windscreen, chrome wire wheels, Lucas road lamps, rear mounted spare as well as a boxed tool compartment. A mechanical inspection of the car confirms all instruments, lights and electrical components are in proper working order including the wipers and disappearing trafficators! Driving the Tickford is an absolute joy. The finely tuned carburetors assist the motor with effortless revs to full-power. The transmission has excellent upper gear syncros, both warm and cold. The brakes are receptive and well balanced, and the suspension has a tight and responsive feel. The engine compartment and undercarriage are very nicely detailed and show evidence of a proper restoration. It is easily one of the most receptive and enjoyable TA's we have ever offered. Accompanied by an original hand crank, driving and picnic accessories, as well as the correct UK (GVW 756) registration plates, this particular Drophead is an ideal find for the avid MG enthusiast. This rare TA in Tickford form is quite the candidate for many recognized automotive events Worldwide suited for touring or casual show - a great addition to any collection.
