Vehicle Detail
1969 Sonett II V4 VIN# 1294. Last registered in New Jersey in 2007. Clean New Jersey Title. Odometer reads 80,228 miles but I cannot confirm if this is accurate. PLEASE READ CARFULLY. I purchased the car in 2008 because the owner had to remove it from his property (it was not registered) or his landlord was going to have it towed. I needed the car like I needed a hole in my head but the price was right so I figured what the heck. The car was immediately put in my barn and has been sitting there ever since. I finally decided to sell it because I don’t need another project; I already have eight vintage Saabs on the road… The car is too nice to be parted out; I would like to see it get restored. If the reserve is not met I’ll stuff it back in the barn where it will languish until I have the energy to get it back on the road. As you know, rust is a big issue with Sonett’s and this one needs some serious rocker panel work. First the good news: The trunk floor and rear axle tunnel are in surprisingly good condition; how they escaped serious rot is hard to understand. The floor is in surprisingly good shape in most areas except the rockers which are toast. I have personally replaced rockers on Sonett’s before. I have personally repaired Saab floor pans that were WORSE than this one and I have to say it’s NOT easy. It will be necessary to cut the floor pan back two inches from the rockers (toward the center of the car) and piece in new metal to attach the new rockers. It will be necessary to piece in the ends of the rockers and areas around the ends of the rockers. The ONLY way to do this correctly is to remove the body and flip the pan upside down or better yet, put on a rotisserie. New rockers are still available from a few people that specialize in Sonett's. I bought the car without an engine and transmission but will give the purchaser a Sonett 1500cc V4 that was in one of my other cars. It was removed when the valves burned due to unleaded gas in an engine that did not have hardened valve seats. Other than needing a valve job the engine was fine. I will also give you a Sonett smooth case 4 speed transmission that I removed from a running car. The transmission worked fine when I removed it and has been in dry storage. Please note both the engine and transmission are NOT in the car and come with no implied warranty. The seats have the original upholstery and are in very good condition. While the car sat in my barn the paint started to oxidize. This morning I waxed the bonnet only and as you can see it shines more than the rest of the car. I think a rigorous compounding will bring the paint back to life and look good from 20 feet--- This is no concourse paint job! The rear window is NOT cracked. It’s one of the nicest rear windows I’ve ever seen; it doesn’t have delamination— No disappointments on the rear window! All other glass is OK too. The dash is in great shape. The cars wiring has not been tampered with. Let’s face it folks; what you are bidding on here is the beginning of a very long project that will need to be towed off my property. On the plus side it’s a very nice color—blue is pretty rare and it isn’t gross like so many other Sonett colors—and the rear window is good (that’s worth $1,200 alone). The car is not 100% complete; what you see is what you get (I would say its 98% complete.) If you don’t see a particular part, don’t hesitate to ask me if it’s included. If it’s some silly little thing and I have a spare I’ll toss it in. So there you have it. The reserve is set low and I believe fair. Please don’t bid if you don’t have the time, energy, money and knowledge to complete this project. The car is located in Walden, NY and can be seen in person before auctions end. $200.00 non-refundable deposit is due within 48 hours of auctions end; payable by PayPal Only. The car must be picked up in two weeks. Options for paying the balance are: Cash or certified check when picking it up or PayPal BEFORE you pick it up. PayPal payment must CLEAR prior to picking it up. Bring a helper to get the motor and transmission in/on your tow vehicle. I have a hoist but it’s a ball breaker to move these buggers. The car has a clean New Jersey Title signed by the person that I bought the car from. I never signed the title. That means YOU sign the title as if you purchased it from the guy in NJ. If you live outside of the USA YOU ARE RESPONCIBLE to arrange having the car, engine and transmission picked up from my home in Walden, NY. I WILL NOT deliver anything anywhere, period. If you want the engine and transmission bolted together and put in the car to make transport easier, I will do it for an additional $200 to cover my labor. Forgive me for stating the obvious but--- the car will NOT run if I put in the motor and transmission because I will not connect anything to the engine.
