Vehicle Detail

UP FOR BID MAMA MIA! That's Italian! Up for bid WITH NO RESERVE is my 1969 Lancia Flavia 2000 Berlina (Sedan). It is best thought of as a complete parts car, mostly because of my impression that it would have only a modest value in good condition that would not justify restoration. After seeing that in Europe (as on Mobile.de) sellers are asking $3,000 to $4,000 for project cars and $10,000 to $12,000 for nice cars, a dedicated preservationist or movie car rental company might justify a 'cheap, so-so' restoration to save the car. The car is very dark navy blue with red vinyl interior. It would be a great car to drive if saved because these real Lancias were true European thoroughbred cars. After the discontinuation of the Flaminia, the Flavia 2000 was by 1969 the flagship sedan of the Lancia line. Although Fiat bought the company in 1969, the Flavia was still 100% Lancia, as no compromises to design, materials or build quality had yet been made. With its unique 2.0 liter, flat-four, four-speed, FWD drivetrain mounted for very low center of gravity, transverse leaf front spring (in good shape on this car), gas-filled shocks, great roadholding and thick, cushy seats. the Flavia 2000 Berlina is a very comfortable, great-driving car that will cruise effortlessly at 80 MPH all day long. The Flavia has a solid CAST ALUMINUM FRONT SUBFRAME! I bought this car in 1980 and used it as my everyday driver for several years before parking it when its clutch disc was wearing out and starting to slip and one outer CV joint was going bad and getting noisy. It comes with a new CV joint and boot. This would be a great parts car for a second series Flavia / 2000 Pininfarina Coupe because the mechanical systems are all the same. It is totally complete mechanically, and after soaking some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders I cranked the engine and it is free and has compression. The water pump was tight and dragging (not completely frozen), so I just loosened its belt. The alternator was free. I think the only things missing are the badge and several bars from the grille (which has been previously poorly repaired) and one door marker light lens. The car has a clean OK title, but tag/registration has been expired for years. I am only the third titled owner, and actually just the second 'real' owner. The car was bought new on 10/17/1969, from Saicar Lancia in Milano for use as a company car by the Italian branch of a company owned by a man from Chicago, IL. Two years later on a visit to his Milano branch, the man from Chicago heard that this Flavia was about to be traded in on a new car. He told his people to ship the car to him in Chicago instead - that he wanted to use it as a commuter car to drive to and from the train station, which he did from late 1971 until 1980, when I bought it. I picked it up in Highland Park and drove it home to Tulsa. It was my only driver for several years, and I took it on a number of wonderful, long distance trips. The five-digit odo reads 48 KKM, and it has certainly been around once. I doubt if it has been around twice, but I can't be sure. Since it is more than ten years old, it must be sold 'miles exempt.' She has been parked for about 30 years, of which she spent 18 years in a garage, the rest outside. I could never bear to part with her, but loss of storage now dictates that I must. For those who might be interested in restoring her, I will try to describe the condition of her body and cosmetics in some detail. She has never been wrecked or repainted, but will need quite a bit of rust repair before she would be ready to paint. She has serious rust in several isolated areas, but NO RUST in most of the floor pan, the front and rear lower valence panels, the front bottoms of the front fenders and the rear bottoms of the rear fenders. The rust in the rocker panels is only at their ends, and mainly in their front ends. The worst rust is in the left front corner of the floor pan, rear bottom of the D/S front fender and the front of the driver's side (D/S) rocker panel, which affects an area of the floor pan ~12" long X ~12" wide. There is a corresponding smaller bad area of rust in the right front corner of the floor pan and front of the P/S rocker panel approximately 2/3 the size of the one on the D/S. There is much smaller area of rust-out (~ half the size of your hand) at the rear end of each rocker panel. Most of the jacking points will still support the car. There is rust perforation in the front edge of the hood, and surface rust along the rear edge of the trunk lid. There is bad rust in most of the D/S rear wheel arch. The trunk floor is fine, but there are several very small spots of rust perforation in the bottom of the spare tire well. Please check the rust in the photos. There are several dents in the bumpers. There are no big dents in the body. The glass is good. The original red vinyl seat upholstery is crispy, and would have to be redone. The foam is probably okay. She needs a new headliner and new front rubber floor mats. The dash is cracked. The door panels are pretty good as-is, but the P/S front door pull has been wrapped with tape. Some of the trim on the car, such as the bumpers and wheel covers, is stainless steel, and does not suffer from rust. The chrome trim is complete except for the original square Italian license tag frame. The glass is good. The Dunlop four-wheel disc brake system would have to be completely rebuilt, as would most other mechanical systems except for the transaxle. The engine could probably be made to run without a complete overhaul, but it was using some oil, although not really visibly smoking. The shocks all needed replacing. A rat has chewed through several wires (e.g.: to brake failure switch and left headlights) and rubber vacuum lines in the engine compartment. All four tires are awful, but one tire and its tube are still holding air. All window regulators, door handles and latches, and trunk and hood latches work. The ignition switch is stuck in the 'off' position. The car will roll freely. The car never had a radio. The blower fan and wipers worked when parked. It comes with one complete set of original keys, including the one for the manually actuated steering lock, and a spare original ignition key. An NOS OEM OUTER CV JOINT comes with the car. The owners manual is dirty and badly stained after being apparently defiled by a rat, but it can still be used for its information. I can provide a copy of the parts book for the cost of copying if needed. The spare wheel has no tire. Copies of much of the paperwork from its early life, including the original bill of sale from Italy, shipping receipt and customs/import papers, are included. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: The starting price for this auction is the value of the car at the crusher. I will never send a real Lancia to the crusher, nor do I want anyone else to, so I have removed any incentive for crushers. There is NO RESERVE PRICE for this auction. We will not end this sale early. It is our preference to sell this car to a buyer within the 48 contiguous United States. Any prospective bidder from outside this area should contact us BEFORE BIDDING to discuss his plans for shipping and payment. We accept payment by Paypal (for DEPOSIT ONLY), Cashier's Check, or cash if paid in person. Non-performing buyers will be given negative feedback and reported to eBay (which may result in suspension). This car is being re-listed because the buyer who won it on 8/2/14, was, as a result of an inadvertent error on his part, unable to make payment through eBay's system, and would therefore not have qualified for eBay Buyer Protection, which he wanted.
