Vehicle Detail

1966 Porsche 911 coupe featured in Excellence MagazineWhen the Porsche Museum chose a color for the 911 they restored to represent the 1966 911 (seen here in the 50th Anniversary Celebration photo gallery), Slate Gray with Red Interior was selected. If you have seen the '66 911 at the museum in person, you know it is a stunning combo on these first edition 911s, and one of the reasons I fell in love with the car I'm now selling. My 911 has been well enjoyed over it's life, with over 227,000 miles and probably more as you are reading this. The car has been well cared for throughout its life, and all who see it are surprised at the high mileage. I hope the lack of the numbers matching engine and high mileage will keep this car a driver, and keep racking up the miles. The car has a very interesting history and is currently featured in the August issue of Excellence magazine. They chose to feature it on their website below. Randy Wells described the car as "an authentic unrestored 1966 911, with everything original to the car besides the engine and paint." which sums it up nicely:http://www.excellence-mag.com/issues/220/articles/great-escapeI plan to bring the car to Irvine Cars & Coffee on Saturday, June 14, and to the Parade of Porsches at the 2014 PCA Parade in Monterey on June 21. This 911 attended the Monterey PCA Parade in 1973, 41 years ago! Please contact me if you would like to view the car in Monterey.Production History:'66 911 #303744 was built in Feb. 1966, and was delivered with engine 903879 which was one of the last Solex carburetor engines to leave the factory. Due to a defect with the original engine, it was replaced with case #911062 from a '67 911, an engine similar in specification to the '66 original. The Solexes were replaced with Webers. The original Solex carburetors and parts were kept boxed, including air cleaner, dual Pierburg mechanical fuel pumps, and hard fuel lines.Specifications:According to the original sales invoice, the car was originally ordered in slate gray with a red vinyl interior. The following options were specified: 9303 Antenna (with special request to mount on passengers side)9189 Sisal factory floor mat set (the complete set, including the rear seat shelf mat, were stored at some point after delivery and are in excellent condition)9447 Headrest, passengers side only9307 loudspeaker9204/9205 Shoulder and lap seat belts, both sides (still has them)9481 tinted glass9267 extended steering column Special request for standard European model with miles speedometerSpecial request for European Bosch headlights (these are the H1 lights that are still on the car)Special request for clear front parking lights and amber rear turn signals (these lights are still on the car, and though faded somewhat, still look presentable)Owner History:The car was one family owned prior to my purchase in 2011. The original owner was an aeronautical engineer at Lockheed, who also owned a '59 356A and '63 356B in the same color scheme. He wanted to special order the 911 to match his 356s, and take delivery of the car in Germany to avoid sales tax. He corresponded with Joachim Pieper, a sales agent at Max Moritz Porsche, to order the car, register it in Germany for him, and drive the required miles to qualify it as a used car for export. Because it was originally registered in Germany, it may qualify to be exported there tax free. After Peiper put the miles on the car and shipped it, Bill received the car in Saratoga, CA where it remained until 1986. Bill was a technical advisor to, and later vice president of the Golden Gate Region Porsche Club of America (PCA) chapter. He also published tech articles that appeared in the national PCA Panorama magazine: PCA Article ArchiveIn 1986 he sold the car to his nephew who was a mechanic and the owner of a small import auto repair shop in San Diego. In 2011 he sold it to me by responding to an ad I placed looking for an early 911 in a unique color combination.I've always been obsessed with the rare and interesting color schemes on early 911s. I've been fortunate to have owned a lot of them! I tend to drive and enjoy my 911s for about a year then sell them on and get another one. I've had this one for 3 years now and it is difficult to let go, but I still have a copper brown '76 930 to enjoy.Documents: This is one of the best documented 911s you will find. Please see my photos to view all the documents. 11 letters of signed correspondence from Joachim Peiper regarding ordering, purchase, and putting miles on the car to qualify it for export as a used car.Original order sheet from Max Moritz with special requests for turn signals, carburetor jets, and antenna on right side.Original factory invoice in German (extremely rare!)Registration cards for most years since 1986.A rare 1966 full color brochure about the newly introduced 911 and 912.Photos of the car from the 1970s, and a 20 minute video (converted from 8mm) of the car attending several PCA parades including the 1973 Monterey Parade. See the links section below to see the video.Original Owners manualA photoscan of the original Kardex build sheet (will add photos soon)Complete 1973 Monterey PCA Parade packet (see photos)Receipts for parts purchased since i've owned itSales invoice/window sticker in German and EnglishOrder sheet in German and EnglishMiscellaneous notes and receipts from the Arnetts' ownership. They did most of the work on the car themselves and did not have many receipts. Bill drew very detailed diagrams for electrical modifications he did.All export and import documents including customs declaration as a used car, bill of lading, and freight ship papers (see photos)Body Condition: A dry California car since delivered in 1966, the car is completely free of rust. The car has spent the past three years in San Bernardino, CA. Original undercoating in most areas including the floorpan! No rust holes anywhere in the floorpan, back seat area, rocker panels, and rear torsion bar areas. These areas look as clean and original as you would expect a California driven car to be. Please see my photos for more details.Car has never been in an accident.Car had one respray in the early 1990s. It was an excellent quality windows out respray, but the paint is starting to show its age as Randy mentions in his article. It still shines up beautifully though, and you have to look closely to see the flaws. I've noted the few flaws in the photos. The serial number "744" is stamped on both doors, both front fenders, rear decklid, and "303744" is stamped in the area below the radio, on the doorjamb paint tag, below the smugglers box, and the aluminum VIN tag on the slam panel. The red-outlined foil stickers are present in the rear engine compartment.Nice original orange hood badgeChrome work is in very good original condition. Again in amazing shape considering the mileage The original spare wheel is missing, replaced by a 14" Fuchs wheel.Chrome 4.5" wheels are in good unrestored condition with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires, bought new in 2012. Great vintage look! The rear package shelf is completely rust free. When I removed the rear shelf for cleaning I took some photos of it.Headlights are the original Euro H1s which are excellent.Interior Condition:The complete Sisal floor mat set, including the rear seat shelf mat, were stored at some point after delivery and are in excellent condition.Seats are in good original condition with minor wear shown. No rips or tearsThe original dash is very nice, surprisingly with no cracks at all!Original Headliner is in great condition.Original sun visors in great shape.Original chrome rearview mirror is shiny and not pitted.Original velvet carpet in very nice conditon.Headliner in good original conditonOriginal wood dash lacquer is faded in places but still presentable...refinish it or enjoy the patina. Original Blaupunkt radio. I reinstalled it for looks but did not wire it in...it may still work but I'd have it gone through. All electrical systems are working including the headlights, turn signals, wipers, and all gauges. Side windows, vent windows, door latches and locks work greatPlease read captions on these photos which provide more details.Mechanical Condition:The engine was rebuilt in the early 1980s with E pistons and cams before the original owner sold it to his nephew, a Porsche enthusiast who was a owner (as well as a mechanic) of a small import auto repair shop.It was a daily driver for much of it's life, but from the 1990s until my purchase it was used only occasionally.Compression on all cylinders between 151-158 psi (see pics of the compression gauge for each cylinder)Rubber brake lines recently replaced, fresh brake fluidClutch and synchros are excellent, and the transmission shifts like a proper 901 should with no grinding. The Excellence author drove the car before I replaced the bushings in the shift mechanism, which really helps with the lever action.Weber carburetors were recently rebuilt (since the article was written) and are excellently balanced and tuned.Runs, rides, and handles great like a SWB 911 should.Stock heat exchangers and muffler are in good conditionLinks:Please view these photos and their captions for more details: 180+ more photos Video of the car in the 1970s (converted from 8mm film) at Laguna Seca and the 1973 PCA Parade in Monterey.50 Years of Porsche (27 photos of the slate gray, red interior '66 911 at the factory museum. When you see this video of Magnus Walker and his driver condition 1966 911, you will understand why my 911 has so many miles on it!Terms and Conditions:No Reserve. Please do NOT ask for a buy it now price! This auction will be completed and will NOT be ended early so please bid without worrying that you are wasting your time. Car is sold as-is with no warranty. You may subject the car to a Pre Purchase Inspection (flatbedded both ways at your expense to a reputable Porsche specialist shop within 60 miles) within 3 days after winning, but this is an old, high mileage car and I will not pay for any repairs. You may cancel your purchase if the PPI reveals anything that I did not already disclose in the auction and I will re-list the car.Car may be viewed and driven by appointment.Additional pictures and info by request.Payment by wire transfer or cashiers check onlyI have sold cars overseas before (I have references) and will be happy to work with foreign buyers. I may be able to deliver the car to one of the export companies at the port of Long Beach. Thanks for your interest, and happy bidding! On Jun-15-14 at 23:14:50 PDT, seller added the following information: I added pictures of the rebuilt Weber carburetors currently installed and the driver's doorjamb VIN and paint code tag. Please ask me for any other areas you'd like pictures of.On Jun-17-14 at 14:57:30 PDT, seller added the following information: I just uploaded a picture of the original factory Kardex build sheet. I've also had many requests for a buy it now price. Once again, I will NOT end the auction early. Letting the auction run will give me the best price and gives everyone a fair shot. Thanks for understanding. On Jun-20-14 at 10:26:18 PDT, seller added the following information: The car was recently checked out with a paint meter, and it was between 4-5 mils all around with no filled spots. This means the car was likely stripped to bare metal for the repaint. The owner said he thought it was stripped, but wasn't sure since it was done back in the early 90s, so I didn't mention it in the ad. I will NOT be able to make it up to Monterey this weekend unfortunately. You may still come see the car in San Bernardino, about 1 hour from Los Angeles.
