Vehicle Detail

1998 BMW 740IL                                                                             Very nice condition black on black, 4.4 liter V8 with 5 speed automatic transmission. 224,000 miles.                                     No rust through on the body, no rips or tears in the black leather. Excellent wood with only a siongle crack in the shifter knob. Starts, idles, runs and shifts perfectly.                             Everything works.                             Driven frequently and always garaged. I've owned it since November, 2010. Clear title in my name and in my hand.                             Original paint in nice condition with about the normal amount of parking lot dings, scratches, rock chips and small surface rust spots for a well cared for 1998 model. It still looks very sharp from 5 feet. I'm not embarrassed to take it nice places ;-) If you are familiar with the 1995-2001 BMW E38 seven series you know what they are all about. This is a real driver's car! Very roomy inside, including a huge amount of room for back seat passengers and a great comfortable ride. Very fast, handles and corners like BMW's are famous!                                                         Power, heated, memory front driver's seat. Works perfectly                       Power, heated, front passenger's seat. Works perfectly                       Dual automatic climate control. Works perfectly                       Ice cold air conditioning. Works perfectly                       Excellent heat. Works perfectly                       Heated front seats. Both work perfectly.                       Heated steering wheel. Works perfectly.                       Factory GPS navigation, including 2012 data discs for all 50 states of the US and Canada. Works perfectly                       Factory trip computer. Works perfectly                       Excellent AM/FM/weather band stereo including trunk mounted 6 CD changer. Everything, except the cassette player, works perfectly. Comes with 2 CD magazines.                       Power windows with express function both down and up. All 4 work perfectly                       Power moon roof with express open and close and rear tilt. Works perfectly                       Power shade for rear window. Works perfectly. It also has manual shades for the rear side windows. They are in excellent condition                       Express start function. Turn the key to the start position briefly then let go. The starter will crank automatically until it starts without the need to hold the key in the start position. Works perfectly                       Nice factory floor mats in the rear, and wonderful, custom made coco mats in the front. The coco mats are easy to clean and they DO NOT move!                       The headliner is excellent. Very clean and not loose or "drooping." The sunvisors are also very nice with the "air bag" warning stickers in excellent shape, not coming off as they often do. There is a small indent in one corner of the driver's visor from a garage door opener being clipped to it before my ownership. Not bad at all.                       Remote lock/unlock. Works perfectly will one key. The second key will open the doors & trunk and start and run the car perfectly but the remote function does not work.                       A neat feature of the remote is the ability to roll down all the windows and open the sunroof using it. When it's sitting in the sun on a hot summer day getting the hot air before you get in is great!                                   Minor Faults  The car has a few maintenance related faults, but is safe to drive anywhere. The minor faults did not stop me from making it my car of choice for my "Drive Around Lake Michigan" vacation a year ago. It did great and it was a wonderful trip.                                                         There is a minor vibration in the steering wheel from about 50 MPH to 60 MPH. This is typical for BMW's with this milage. The cure is to replace various suspension bushing. I replaced the front sway bar bushing and sway bar end links. At some point the rear  trailing arm bushings should be replaced but the car is safe to drive as is for many miles.                       Slow valve cover gasket leak. Another typical BMW 7 series maintenance item and was done shortly before I bought the car. I have to add about 1/2 quart of oil between changes so it's about time to do it again; however, there's no hurry.                       The check engine light is NOT on. However, there is a minor evaporation system leak. once or twice a month the "check engine" light comes on and shows error code 0442. I've been just clearing it. It's most likely a loose hose clamp on one of the tank connections or a loose gas cap. I just haven't tracked it down yet. It does not effect the way the car runs or performs and you may decide to just keep clearing the code once in while.                       Slow power steering fluid leak from the return hose. Another typical BMW maintenance item. At this point it isn't enough to warrant changing. I put in about an ounce of fluid between oil changes.                 Cruise control works but will "kick-off" going up a hill. A good used actuator will cure the problem. There are plenty on eBay and changing it is quick and easy.                 There is a crack in the winshield. It's very low, just above the line of the dash, in the driver's bottom corner and does not obscure vision. It isn't going anywhere. I've chosen not to pay the $100 deductible to replace it until it gets a worse crack. You may want to do the same. There's a photo that shows it clearly.                 Has the typical pixel loss in the main instrument cluster common to these cars (see photo) but since it has the factory GPS and trip computer monitor it hardly matters.                 The glove box is stuck shut. Repairing it requires replace ment of the cable and latch. Even though the original owner's manual is in there I've elected to leave it alone. A digital copy of the owner's manual is included on CD, as well as a digital copy of the Bentley repair manual.                             The reserve is set low and is very reasonable for a BMW of this age and condition. If the reserve isn't met, I'll take care of the maintenance items and keep driving it.                                     The only reason I'm selling is that I've had spring car fever. I get it every couple of years and I just want something different. I brought home a 1990 Mercedes 560 SEl a couple of weeks ago and the mighty Bimmer needs a new home so the Merc can take over it's garage space.                                 You can download a copy of the maintenance history since I've owned the car. Actually it starts before my ownership as the previous owner also kept good records. Maintenance History.PDF. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I'll give you a straight, honest answer as I want to be just as happy when you drive away as you are when you win the bid.
