Vehicle Detail
I bought this Camaro back in 2006 as a track day project. I wanted to build it into something fast and fun, but still streetable. As a mechanical engineer, I felt compelled to plan the project out fairly well before starting any modifications. So I drove it in stock form through the rest of that first summer of ownership. Everywhere I went the car got compliments. Everyone loves the unusual Hugger Orange paint. Driving the car also gave me a good feel for where it was strong and where it could use some improvement. I spent the entire fall and winter planning the upgrades I wanted to make, and researching the parts required to make it happen. Then, over the next five winters the upgrades began. The engine was sent to local race shop to have the rotating assembly strengthened and balanced, head work, performance cam installed, etc. The transmission was rebuilt (even though it didn’t need it) with upgraded parts. The rear axle was rebuilt with an upgraded Eaton limited slip differential and taller final drive. The suspension bushings and components were upgraded to more robust pieces. Summer of 2011 rolled around and the car was ready for fun. Now everywhere I drove it people complimented the looks, but they also ohh’ed and ahh’ed over how mean it sounded. And it has the performance to back up the sound. A mechanic at a shop attached to gas station I frequented once spent half an hour asking questions about it and couldn’t stop saying what a fine car it was, and how awesome it sounded. When I finally was able to get free he practically begged me to lay into it when I pulled away so that he could ‘listen to it sing’. I did. Every time I go back to that station the same mechanic pokes his head out and it’s understood that I’m supposed to put my foot in it when I leave. Now the sad part of the story. I mentioned that I built the car to be a track day and HPDE car. The problem is right about the time I finally got the car finished to my satisfaction life got really busy. I never had time to so much as autocross with it. It’s a fun car to drive on the street. But it always feels like it’s just begging to be turned loose and to stretch its legs – something that would be ill-suited to public roads. A couple more years went by and I hardly managed to find time to put more than a couple hundred miles on it each summer. So here we are… It’s spring 2014 and I’ve come to the realization that I am probably never going to have time to use this car as I had intended. So I’m selling it for 2 reasons. One: It seems like a waste for a car like this to just sit in my garage for most of the year, only to be let out for the occasional romp or car show on sunny days. Two: I have an unexpected restoration project in my future. I came into my Great Uncle’s old 1960 GMC 4x4. It’s a great old truck with a lot of sentimental value, but it needs a restoration… And I need the garage space. I hate to see the Camaro go. But I just can’t justify keeping it any longer. It’s been in a very loving home ever since I’ve owned it. I’m the sort who immediately investigates and corrects the slightest squeak or rattle. As I mentioned, I’m a mechanical engineer. So I have a hard time ignoring a piece of machinery that isn’t working perfectly. Bid with confidence knowing that this is a meticulously assembled and cared for vehicle. This isn’t a car for everyone. It’s fast. It’s loud. The place it wants to be is out on a closed road course where it can be driven hard. I’m not going to be able to provide that in the foreseeable future. I’d like this car to go someone who wants to drive it hard as was intended. Below you’ll find a complete list of all the modifications made to the car, and my honest assessment of the car’s current condition. Please feel free to contact me with any and all questions. I’ve come to enjoy talking about this car. My e-mail is ken.carmon@comcast.net I am perfectly willing to discuss my reserve price. If you happen to be local to the Lansing, MI area, you are welcome to come by go for a test ride. Here’s the list of upgrades and a thorough description of the car… - LS1 Engine Fully Upgraded: o Professionally machined and assembled o balanced rotating assy. w/forged rods (pro race shop documentation included) o GM Performance Cam: Valve Lift = .525” Intake Duration = 218 degrees Exhaust Duration = 227 degrees Lobe separation angle = 112 degrees o Adjustable Cloyes Timing Set o Heads mildly ported / 3-angle valve grind / decked / 11.5:1 comp. o Melling High-Volume Oil Pump o “Flex-Fuel” (runs on E-85 or gasoline) o Professional Custom Tune on E-85 and Gas Engine Computers (car comes with both) - Long Tube Headers with 3” Diameter Exhaust - 3.73:1 Rear End Ratio - Eaton limited slip “posi” differential - Improved Suspension with Boxed Control Arms / Panhard Rod - Urethane Bushings Throughout (except front lower arms) - Adjustable Front Lower Arms with Spherical Bearings - Upgraded transmission with Viper shift forks, carbon fiber blocker rings, all new roller bearings, & more - 5 point belts / roll bar - custom interior - Air conditioning works but is not currently charged. - Have all receipts, build sheets, & original documentation Included “extra” parts: - 2 engine computers (one for gasoline fuel, one for E-85 fuel) - Original front seat belts - Original headlights and tail lights - Driver / Passenger air bags and associated electronics - (2) 3” high flow catalytic converters (included but not currently installed) - Original seat tracks and motors for powered driver’s seat. Known Issues: (and some of these are really nit-picky) - Catalytic converters not installed (converters are included with sale) - Airbags not currently installed (the original, un-deployed airbags and controls are included with the sale) - Passenger side window motor is very slow… Probably will eventually need replacement. - Windshield has a small stone chip (It’s been there since I got the car in 2007) - A few minor stone chips on the nose, and one dime-sized ding on the passenger quarter panel. - Driver’s side rocker panel has a couple dents from the previous owner. - The idle “wanders” a little bit on a restart when the engine is warm. I think the engine tune just gets a little confused on a warm restart, and overshoots its target parameters for a few seconds (I’ll try to post a video of this so you can see what I mean). I was unhappy with how it was idling when I started it up. So I went looking for issues. Long story short... The A/C compressor is putting an unusual amount of load on the engine (even when the HVAC system is completely off). I pulled the drive belt that runs the compressor and the car idles as it should now. Diagnosis: The A/C compressor probably should be replaced. I'm not going to change the price of the car. I still believe that what I'm asking is an excellent deal for what you're getting. I just wanted everyone to know that A/C is currently inop. Please bid accordingly. As always, I welcome your questions. Thanks! On Apr-15-14 at 08:56:52 PDT, seller added the following information: **UPDATE #2** One more modification that I forgot to mention in the description, and which might be relevant... The car has the Eibach Pro Kit springs installed... which lowers the ride height by 1.2" front and back. The current alignment settings are also fairly aggressive. The car corners like it's on rails... But you have to be careful if you're planning to go over any speed bumps :) If you're planning to use the car as a daily driver, I might recommend having the alignment set back to something closer to stock. The current settings will probably wear the front tires out faster that you'd like.
