How about a 6.2 / 6.5 GM Turbo Diesel Suburban that will get out of it's own way towing a grade without the expense of a Duramax conversion or the 'can't pass a gas station' issue that a 454 has? This is the exact project the Suburban turned into starting with a ruined 6.5 engine from the last owner. The engine was replaced with a 30K or less low mile surplus military take out 6.2 engine. (A 6.5 GM Diesel is simply a bored out 6.2 diesel.) New 6.5 exhaust manifolds were used and a large A Team Turbo with a BD turbo diverter valve were added to replace the restrictive factory turbo. Now instead of rolling over and loosing power over 2200 RPM like the factory turbo does this setup will hit 10 pounds of boost at 2K RPM and pull hard all the way to redline. Rather than being in the slow lane you can do the speed limit on 7% grades towing with it. It still gets an honest 16 MPG at freeway speeds while the dyno reads 208 RWHP / 394 TQ. (The dyno number is at the rear wheels.) Ready for your custom paint job to personalize your hot rod or keep the factory colors for the ultimate retro diesel sleeper. The sound out of the exhaust through the BD turbo diverter valve sounds like a good blizzard of evil escaping that WILL turn heads in town. My video does not do the sound justice.
