Vehicle Detail
Studebaker Truck This auction is for a 1953 Studebaker 2R17A truck. It was originally a water tank truck for the Topton, Pennsylvania fire company. When I bought the truck in 1986, it looked like the picture. IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THAT ANYMORE. I took it apart to restore, and then moved away. In other words, you are buying all the parts to a truck I took apart 28 years ago, and you might be able to make a truck out them again, but you might not. I've always hoped to restore it, but my life has moved on and this truck isn't a part of it. You may be able to re-create a useful Studebaker truck. You may be able to use the parts to restore your own Studebaker truck. You may find they're too far gone. You may put it in your barn and leave it for your kids to deal with. I estimate the scrap value at $500, so that's the minimum bid. No reserve beyond that. The truck includes everything you'd expect from an intact truck dragged out of a field - which is where I found it:- chassis with wheels and drive train.- tires, although they've got some dry rot and cracking from age.- engine and transmission- fenders and cab- steering wheel, column, etc.- all other parts that I took off - radiator, carburetor, etc.- plus, a SECOND engine I have clear title in my name. Here's the info from the serial number plate:Serial number R17A-I6595 (I as in India).Model 2R17A-71Max gross vehicle weight 1600092 net horsepower at 3200 r.p.m. From the model/cab plate:Cab model 2R-C2cab #126655trim # T-6036paint # P-2198 Pennsylvania title issued 1986.VIN R17A16595Max GVW 21,000 lbs - the chassis was reinforced and the GVW raised from the original. It has a power takeoff and the front bumper is extended to accommodate a winch. There's no winch mechanism included. The pictures with this listing are of the truck when I bought it in 1986. It no longer looks like this. I posted some recent videos of the cab to Youtube: Cab exterior: cab exterior Cab interior: cab interior Hood: hood Hood, again: hood, again Fender: fender Fenders, again: fenders, again I regret I don't have more still pictures - somehow I only took video last time I pulled the parts out. I think they give a better idea of the condition, but they're slower to load, etc. Sorry. The truck's chassis was reinforced and the GVW raised. It was a water tank truck for the Topton, Pennsylvania fire department. A picture of it is on the fire company's website , fifth photo from the left on the top line of photos. When I bought it in 1986, it no longer had a tank. When I bought it, the engine was seized and I was unable to get it loose. The other systems worked - brakes, clutch, transmission. That's why I'm including a second engine. The second engine was from a different model and does not have the auxiliary oil pickup tube the heavy-duty engine has. The auxiliary tube extends from the block into the bottom of the oil pan to more efficiently pick up oil. It has been disassembled since 1986. As far as I know, all of the parts I took off are available - it's been moved around my parents' barn from time to time. The cab (including fenders and hood) are solid, with quite a bit of surface rust. There are a few rotten spots here and there - a small spot on the cab floor next to the passenger door, and a quarter-size hole through the floor on the driver's side floor. A couple of rotten spots around the edge of the hood, but the hood itself is solid. Small areas at the back of the fenders, but not the infamous Studebaker quarter panel rot. The cab and fenders have been stored out of the direct weather, but as you can see they are dusty, and the snakes and mice have had free access. The chassis was stored under the barn overhang, but was indirectly exposed to the weather. Also, it had wood and other stuff stacked on it regularly. Once you win, make arrangements with us to pick it up. We would like it picked up within 8 weeks, but we can extend that if you need to. You'll need a rollback or trailer; towing isn't an option. I want to be perfectly clear - this auction is for all the parts I have to the truck I've described here, but I make no representation that I have all the parts necessary to get it running or to restore it. No refund, no return, no allowance for missing or damaged parts. I'd like to see it go to a good home, for restoration or for parts. Good luck, and thanks for looking. *** HOW DID I FORGET *** 3/10/14 - it's got a dual-speed rear axle.
