THIS BEEN ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVOURITES.THE R80 PRETTY MUCH OUT PERFORMED THE R100 BACK THERE IN THE MID 80'S. IT WAS CAMMED UP & LIGHTER BUT IT COST MORE THE R100, SO NOT TOO MANY WERE SOLD IN THE STATES. THE BIG MARKET WAS IN EUROPE WERE THE POLICE USED 'EM LIKE CRAZY. I ALTERED THIS BIKE TO MY LIKING BY GETTING RID OF THE HUGE FAIRING, DECREASING THE TRAIL BY TURNING THE LOWER LEGS AOUND, THIS MADE THE BIKE FEEL LIGHTER & MORE RESPONSIVE IN THE TURNS. I RESEALED THE TOP END AND RE-RINGED IT [WASTE OF MONEY AS THE ORIGINALS WERE JUST FINE] THE NIKASIL PLATING IN THE CYLINDERS WAS PERFECT.I HAD A PAIR OF LATER MODEL R100 HEADS THAT BMW MADE FLOW BETTER DUE TO A CHANGE IN THE VALVE ANGLES, SO I USED THOSE [OF COURSE!] THE ODO STOPPED WORKING SHORTLY AFTER I GOT THE BIKE ON THE ROAD. JUDGING BY THE WEAR I WOULD FIGURE THE BIKE HAD LESS THAN A 100K ON IT. I KNOW I RODE IT AT LEAST ANOTHER 50K. I LOWERED THE SEAT AN INCH AND HAD IT RECOVERED. THE FUEL TANK IS RESEALED WITH AN EPOXY COATING TINTED TO THE ORINGINAL BMW. THERE IS A K&N FILTER INSTALLED AND, AS I REMEMBER I USED A SET OF PROGRESSIVE SRINGS IN THE LEGS. THE KONI REAR SHOCK NEEDS REBUILD. IS KINDA LIKE A POGOSTICK NOW.THE HANDLEBARS ARE CUT DOWN TO THE 'S' BAR BUT I USED A SET OF TOURING BARS TO START WITH , SO THEY ARE WIDER AND MORE STURDY FEELING[I THINK] THAN THE 'S' BARS. THE BIKE HAS BEEN IN STORAGE THE PAST FEW YEARS, BUT IT RUNS WELL & I WOULD RIDE IT ANYWHERE TODAY. A GOOD DETAIL & A PAINT JOB WOULD MAKE THIS R80 AN UNIQE AND FUN BMW.
