Vehicle Detail

Okay guys, real talk for a second here. Show of hands, who’s sold a car on eBay before? One, two…okay, a few of you have sold cars on eBay. That’s good, it’s a worldwide marketplace, probably the best place to sell a vehicle really. Now, how many of you have sold one of your children on eBay? No? Nobody? Not a single one of you has sold a child on eBay? Well then it’s going to be hard for us to relate, because I’m selling my baby on eBay right now…in the form of my 2001 Audi allroad quattro. This has been, quite simply, the best vehicle I’ve ever driven. I’ve had it since 2009, and it was just the perfect, most trouble free car I’ve ever been associated with. Anybody who knows me knows that I’m well known (you know it) for going through vehicles…before the Audi, I believe my average length of vehicle ownership was something in the four month timeframe. The longest I had ever owned any single car was the ’88 IROC I had in high school, which made it a whole year and five months. So frankly, I was as shocked as anybody to own this one for over four years. But it never gave me a single reason to stop loving it. Even now, I sit here writing this with a glass of scotch in my hand and tears in my eyes; my Audi, my one true automotive love, has to find a new home. Here’s what happened. I bought the car in 2009 from a small dealer in Dedham, MA. I traded in a 2005 Dodge Neon SRT-4, which is the worst car I’ve ever seen or heard about. The Audi had around 100k when I bought it, and I was told the timing belt had been done around 90k. Oh, and the person who had it before me was the original owner. Side note, if you run a Carfax or Autocheck on this car, you’re going to see three owners, not two. I bought the car and it was registered in my father’s name until two years ago, so if you want to be a jerk about it, it’s had three owners…but I’m two of them. That’ll be funnier if you meet me, since I’m a pretty big dude. Anyway, I got the car and just drove the hell out of it. Kept gas and oil in it, and it really didn’t need anything else. Everything worked. For a time I was living here in Warwick and commuting 50 miles one-way to Worcester, MA for work…so I was putting over 400 miles a week on the car, which is how we got all the way to 158k. But then all at once, stuff happened. I had been having an issue with the car settling the left front suspension (the car has air suspension) when sitting overnight sometimes. One time I took a trip to Seattle and it stayed up the whole week, another time I ran into a store for 5 minutes and it was on the ground. The car needs a left front airbag, there’s no way around it. The three other airbags are fine…the only reason it’s down on the whole left side in the pictures is because the front left won’t come up, it keeps the rear left down to stay ‘level’. But while it was still driveable, on my way to pick up the wife from work one day, I noticed the volt meter down around 12v. It had never been below 14v before, so that was new. I turned around and headed home, totally just left the wife at work…she got home eventually, but man was she mad. Anyway, the Audi got me all the way back to my house before succumbing to a discharged battery as I rolled into the driveway. Even when the Audi was ill, it got me where I needed to be. Diagnosing the issue as an alternator, I did the research and found out that the job is, frankly, a bitch. I contemplated selling the car right then and there, but I decided that I loved the car so I would do the alternator job…furthermore, while I was in there, I would do the timing belt as well…since it was very little extra work. So it was that at 158k miles the Audi got a brand new Bosch alternator, a Gates Racing kevlar timing belt, new water pump, pulleys, and cam seals. It wasn’t a particularly fun job, but it was just comprehensive…not difficult. Oh, and when I was putting it back together, I did an oil change with Pennzoil Platinum and a Bosch filter. I’ve actually put less than 600 miles on the car since that was done. Shortly thereafter, the leaking left front airbag got worse and burned out the compressor. I replaced the compressor (with a brand new Arnott one), hoping that the bag wasn’t that bad, but it is. Right now, the car won’t even come up. I actually pulled the fuse for it so that the compressor doesn’t just run and run and burn itself out. So it isn’t driveable, but it does run excellent. Let’s see, other stuff it needs…it’s going to need a left front axle. When you make a sharp turn, you can hear it blinding and clicking. If you’re doing the LF airbag, the axle isn’t a ton of extra labor…in fact, doing the axle probably makes the bag job easier. The driver’s side window goes down just flawlessly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a window go down better than the driver’s side front…I mean it’s really a marvel just how nicely it moves downward. That said, it needs some help coming up. It comes up, but you have to pull it while holding the button. I’ve got a great holding-the-wheel-with-my-knee-while-pressing-the-switch-with-one-hand-and-pulling-the-window-with-the-other-technique I’d be more than happy to teach to the winning bidder. I also see an occasional wisp of white smoke from under the hood. It was doing that before I did the timing belt, and I figured I had a pin hole in a hose, but I never could find it. It isn’t a headgasket, compression is good across the board (I tested it while doing the timing belt), and the engine runs strong. As to upgrades, there are a couple of small ones. The car has a Stage 1 ECU from SSP Tuning, which is alleged to make 300+hp and 300+ tq. I never had the car on a dyno, but it pulled like a freight train while healthy. The other is a JH Motorsports ‘Solid’ short throw shifter. I did that about 2 years ago, put in the heaviest reverse-lockout spring, and had the gear shift knob custom made. Hurst doesn’t make a white knob with a euro 6-speed pattern (towards the driver and up), so I found a guy online and he made me one for like $50. I had never seen another Audi with a Hurst style white knob, and I’ve always had one in my cars, so there you go. Besides that, the tires on the car are 245s…stock size for an allroad was 225. I believe they’re a 245/50/17, whichever size they are they have the same diameter as the stock size, so the speedometer is still accurate. They’re Continental Conti Extreme Contact DWS tires, one of the absolute best in their class, and maybe the best tires I’ve ever had on a car…quiet, grippy, and great in all weather. The tires might have 10k miles on them, tons of tread left on the tires. Oh, and you know what’s funny? The car has a solar panel sunroof…just like Toyota put in the Prius two years ago, when the car is in direct sunlight, the panel generates electricity to run the interior fans and blow cooler air into the car. The difference between Toyota and Audi? When Toyota did it, they marketed it as if they had just saved the world. When Audi did it back in 1998 for the A8, an engineer told his boss about his great idea and his boss said “Ja ja ja, put it in zee convenience package, Franz.” So to sum up: 2001 Audi allroad quattro, 158k miles, 2.7 liter v6 twin turbo, 6 speed manual transmission. Excellent interior and exterior. One tiny spot of rust on the roof that hasn’t grown since I got the car, no dents, no rips in the leather. Oh, the CD changer doesn’t work. But the in-dash CD player works fine. New: Alternator, timing belt, water pump, cam seals, serpentine belt, pulleys, level system compressor. Needs: Left front airbag, left front axle. The dartboard that is pictured in the trunk of the car isn’t included in the sale, which is to say that it is absolutely included in the sale if you want it. I have pictures available from when I did the belt if anybody wants to see them. The only reason I’m selling the car rather than fixing it is I just got a job that’s maybe a mile from my house, and I’m buying a pickup truck since the gas mileage won’t kill me anymore with a short commute. If you have any questions, or if I stupidly left out something super basic while writing out my car’s life story, please feel free to ask. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE On Oct-06-13 at 17:17:20 PDT, seller added the following information: I nearly forgot even though it probably goes without saying, the car is going to need to be trailered away. It runs, you could probably drive it, but you it would be super unpleasant with no left side suspension. And you would run the risk of burning out the compressor as well. I'd just trailer it. On Oct-09-13 at 17:33:29 PDT, seller added the following information: Right, so update. Nothing new with the car itself, it's just sitting there. I got a good deal on a truck (which sometimes happens when you get a vehicle from a family member), so at this point I'm ready to move the Audi for a little less money than I originally intended if need be. In fact, I just lowered by reserve by $250. Why? Because I want it to have a new home, and it's making me sad to keep seeing it every day. So the current bid is extremely close to my reserve (which is less than $2000). Naturally I hope you all still go nuts bidding and it reaches a figure that could be safely called stupid, but hey, a man can dream. Also, I'll throw in a Bentley A6-allroad service manual to the winning bidder on the condition that if they intend to part out my baby, they do not tell me. Just lie right to my face, tell me it's going to a good home, then do what you gotta do...I swear I'll believe it. Anyway, that's like a $80 value for my peace of mind. I've also got some nice Audi vanity plates and plate frames you can have. Again, just don't tell me if you're cutting up my car. Ignorance is bliss and all that.
