Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is my 1996 Volvo 850R Sedan! First and foremost, eBay only allows 24 photos, so I posted my full set of 67 photos to Flickr (click here). You can download the full high-resolution set using links provided further down in this listing.I've owned and loved this car for 10 years. It is my third Volvo. It is my favorite car, but times have changed. I supplemented the Volvo with a pickup truck when I needed more space for some local consulting jobs and have finally replaced it entirely with a new Accord for work and family reasons. I will certainly miss this car and hope to find my Volvo a good new home.In October 2003, when I lived in southern California, I bought the Volvo used from Power Volvo (Torrance, CA). It only had 40,200 miles on it and one previous owner. When I switched jobs in 2007 and moved to Connecticut, I shipped the car across the country. I spent a lot of time flying around the country for work and only had a 12 mile commute round-trip when I was home, so I did not put many miles on the car. In April 2008, the odometer stopped working (and I have never had it repaired). In 2011, I started working from my home office and continued traveling for work (by air), so the car took me to the airport, to NYC for some consulting jobs and short trips around town. To be safe, I am conservatively estimating that the car currently has 135,000 miles on it, but it really probably has less than that. There is a lot I can say about the car, so I'll try to break it down into a few lists below in the listing (scroll down). I'm sure I am forgetting things, so please don't hesitate to call or email with any questions.Thank you for looking at my listing and please get in touch with any questions!Jordan MY CONTACT INFORMATIONEmail: Please use the eBay feature to ask me a questionPhone: (203) 242-7570 (voice or text)Location: Danbury, CT 06811Availability for inspection: I will be available to show the car by appointment, during the day or evening, from Monday 9/23 to Sunday 9/29. LINKS AND GENERAL INFORMATIONNew York Times ReviewSpecifications (from KBB)67 Photos Set of the car:Archive (.zip file) of all high-resolution photos of my Volvo (119 MB download!)Listing of individual, downloable, high resolution photos Same photos as above, but posted on Flickr (easier to view) WHAT IS INCLUDEDThe car, in the condition shown by the photos and as described in this listing.Keys: 1 working remote keyfob; 2 standard keys, 1 valet key.All available maintenance/service records. I have some from the original owner and most from when I have owned the car. I just went through them and I know I am missing a few major things (i.e. replacing front lower control arms/ball joints in 2011, some regular maintenance like plugs and a transmission fluid flush) and some minor things (oil changes and such).Full size spare tire (the car originally had a donut), jack and lug wrench.Winter tires: 4 195/50/R15 winter tires mounted on black steel rims with (unused) hub caps. 2 of the tires are actually all-season, I believe. These tires are near the end of their useful life, so please don't count on them. Tread depth (RL: 4/32, RR: 5/32, FR: 5/32, FL: 6/32).Volvo user manual and documentationHaynes service manualExtra parts:New thermostat (a faulty thermostat in 2004 or 2005 is the only time this car has ever really broken down on me, so I was planning on putting a new one in just as preventative maintenance this year). New power antenna mast (the one on the car has a broken internal part and doesn't work)Various relays and small computersSpare engine control unit computer (I can't find this presently, so I cannot guarantee I will include this. I purchased it by mistake, as the problem I was trying to fix was really the ABS computer). Headliner clips and trim (no headliner)Misc headlight bulbs, interior bulbs, relays, rivets, etc. Anything else I find in the next week! CONDITION - THE GOODStarts quickly and reliably, drives comfortably. Handles predictably, has plenty of power and stops quickly.Clean title.Good fuel mileage: I typically get between 21 and 23 MPG with a mix of city and highway driving. I get even more on long highway trips. The car is fully loaded. The 850R got all of Volvo's options and there was nothing more you could get.Moon roof (opening/closing, vent mode, shade) works perfectly and seals properlyAll doors, locks, mirrors and windows operate properly. No warning lights on dash (like check engine, abs/tracs, service, etc., but they are all operational - i.e. come on when the ignition is first turned on).Safety: Replaced driver seat belt (old one didn't retract). All other seat belts and air bags are intact. ABS / traction control are working.Air conditioning / climate control works well, but AC apparently has a slow leak and needs 1.5 cans of R134a or so each year. There are only a few dings. The car is well built with thick sheet metal! I've had the car looked over by mechanics who specialize in Volvos to make sure it was safe (in the past year). Heated seats work.Sliding cup holder in center console has been replaced and is fully working.Rear seats fold (60/40 split with center pass through). The front passenger seat also folds down. You can fit a 10 ft ladder in there (and I have)!Stereo is fully working, but reception is somewhat weak (hence why I bought a new antenna mast - I never bothered replacing it, but will include it with the sale). The security code for the stereo is written on the top of the unit. Tires: Summer tires have lots of life left (8/32 tread depth on all 4) and are all well-rated tires. They have been regularly rotated. The front two tires have slow leaks are require air every two weeks. Winter tires on steel rims are provided (see above section for more info on winter tires). CONDITION - THE BADYou usually have to press the "Shift Lock Release" button to get the car out of Park. The solenoid that releases the gear lever from Park when your foot is on the brake does not work consistently. There is no headliner! The liner started to come down and the foam was getting everywhere (most importantly, on my wife), so I cut out the headliner. There is a small engine oil leak. With the proper spec high-mileage engine oil, it barely loses a half of a quart between oil changes (thin, reconstituted stuff that Firestone used, it lost twice that!). I think it is the rear main seal. There are some rattles. Nothing too pronounced, but it is a 17 year old car.The trunk struts that assist you lifting it are worn out. The trunk is fairly heavy to lift and will slam shut. It does stay open on its own without any issue. The driver seat is not as comfortable as it once was. The upper dash has scuffs on top (this was my only car when I bought a house, so it had lumber and other stuff in it). The dash also has sun damage and is popping up in some places. There is some suspension noise when turning the steering wheel to full lock. The Harmon/Kardon MP3 player kit (for the 30 pin iPod) is disconnected / not working. Please look closely at the photos, but also note the following:The front spoiler/lower bumper was replaced with a standard (non-R spec). I hit a rock that rolled in front of the car during a storm, cracked the front right of the spoiler and have riveted it back in place. Sorry, this is the worst part of the car! Each of the 17" Volan wheels has some curb rash. The paint has some scuffs on the bumper corners and some dents on the rear bumper, typical for a car the was parked on NYC streets. The windshield has a light scratch along the path of the tip of the passenger windshield wiper. Some internal and external plastic plastic covers are missing (i.e. the ones over the front seat bolt heads, the ones that go over the exterior roof silver trim). The rest of the paint has some marks and stains. Most can probably be buffed out, but it is a 17 year old car.Someone tried to steel the "R" logo on the back of the car, but didn't quite get it, so now it looks like a "P" RECENT MAINTENANCEABS/TRACS computer rebuilt in 2012. I had a new one put in in 2003, so perhaps this needs to be done every 7-9 years. All thick (4 or 6 gauge) battery cables replaced with 4 AWG all-copper cable. The car was having a hard time starting and I had found low voltage at the starter. Voltage levels checked after service throughout the car and all are very good. May 2012.Reshimmed A/C compressor April 2012.New radiator and hoses in November 2011.Cruise control computer and various parts replaced to repair system, October 2011.All 4 brake discs, pads, calipers and fluid replaced September 2011.Both oxygen sensors replaced in September 2011Timing belt and water pump replaced in July 2011 (when I guessed mileage was 120k)Driver's door hinge welded July 2011 (spot welds had cracked).Breather box service in December 2010 (actually done and paid for twice, since my former mechanics didn't quite get it all and I got high crankcase pressure again shortly afterwards. My new mechanics did a very thorough job.)Front lower control arms / ball joints in October 2010 (missing receipt)Have done a transmission flush, replaced wheel bearings and a bunch of other maintenance in the past several years. On Sep-23-13 at 07:39:52 PDT, seller added the following information: LISTING UPDATESMonday, 9/23 10:30 am: I forgot to mention regarding the interior dashboard backlighting: Some of the backlight bulbs on the radio and half of the trip computer LCD are out. I don't find this impedes my usage of the car at night (the trip computer is still visible), but it is noticeable. The interior cabin light, map lights and the rest of the dashboard lights are working.
