Selling a 1999 Volkwagen Passat (1.8L Turbo, 4-Cylinder). It has a clean title and I will happily send you the CarFax in PDF if you are interested in learning more. I am selling the car as-is because it needs a bit of work. This car may be worth your time and effort if you have a trustworthy mechanic who can give you a quote. I will try to explain what the car needs, but I am not a mechanic, so I must sell the car AS-IS. Let me begin with the good: (+) The car has a clean CarFax report and has been well cared for. (+) All of the basics work well--> Heat, Air Conditioning, Power Steering, automatic windows, blowers, windshield wipers, (+) After-market speakers and radio are excellent. 2 Boston Acoustic in the front and 2 Infinity Speakers in the back, HD Radio and Bluetooth Ready AV Head Unit (+) The car runs well and is a trustworthy method for getting to and from work (+) Moon roof works well (+) Good tread left on the tires (+) Passed emissions (+) I have always filled this car with premium as it requires it for the turbo engine, and I have kept the oil changed per recommendations. I use premium oil. (+) Lights and signals all work fine. All of the interior lights work. (+) I have two keys for the car. One of them functions perfectly and can lock the car and unlock the car remotely. The other is a bit sporadic because it is older, but the key works fine. (+) Transmission is very smooth, engine runs great. I replaced the timing belt about 10,000 miles ago, so no major repairs needed.(+) Full spare wheel Now, let me address why the car is being sold AS-IS: (-) The car has 164xxx miles (-) Check engine light is on - I think this may be related to the Evap system (-) After refilling fuel, car needs a little extra pumping on the gas to get going, not sure why (-) ABS Brake system does not function, which is why the light is on. This simply means the anti-lock brake system does not work, but I have not found this to be a significant problem (-) When braking from a high rate of speed, the car shudders a little bit. It may need new front or rear brakes, I am unsure. (-) I was told the car may need a new vacuum tube. (-) The USB port on the radio head unit does not seem to be working, but the AV input works fine. The head unit sticks out a little bit because it is after-market. (-) The cruise control does not work (-) There is a bit of damage on the rear right side. I was struck by another car at a low rate of speed, and it bumped the metal in a bit. You can see it clearly in the picture. Does not affect anything, the door in the back opens and closes perfectly fine. Just cosmetic. (-) The roof upholstery has a small light brown spot. It may be due to the moon roof having a slight leak. (-) The TipTronic shifter doesn't work. This was a lame option; it allowed the car to be driven in a faux-manual mode. The car shifts perfectly in D.(-) Cosmetically, the car has scratches on the exterior paint, especially on the rear bumper. There are one or two cigarette burns in the back from previous owner. (-) The car needs a front wheel bearing in the near future (-) The shocks probably need to be replaced in the near future (-) As you can see in the picture from the front, the lower plastic grill is no longer in place. This is a cosmetic problem only. (-) The headlight on the front right is slightly mis-aligned. The clear plastic sticks out a bit. This is a cosmetic problem only. I am selling this car because my girlfriend and I are going to share hers to save money. It has been reliable for me, and I believe with some work, it will easily run past 200,000 miles.
