The BMW 700 was produced from 1959 through 1965, successfully saving BMW while introducing a vehicle that would shape the car company’s future. Giovanni Michelotti, an icon throughout the European automotive design industry was responsible for the design and 180,000 examples were eventually manufactured. The car was essentially an evolved BMW 600 with a 2-cylinder air-cooled engine derived from the BMW R67 motorcycle placed in the rear of the vehicle. The 700 could be purchased in coupe, saloon or cabriolet configuration. With less than 2,600 examples of the Cabriolet produced, it is unknown how many units actually made it to the U.S. - coupled with a very low survival rate; open-air 700s have become quite the rare find. Offered here is a very original, numbers-matching example finished in cream paintwork over red seating with gray and black appointments. A California car throughout the majority of its life, the car’s low ownership history has been accounted for, while most recently coming from a well-known and much respected BMW collection. The Cabriolet’s preservation comes as a result of these careful stewards. The paint appears to have been reapplied many years ago in correct lacquer materials along with bright work on the bumpers, both show typical blemishing that come along with age. All upholstery and weather equipment have held up very well with great patina. As a testament to its originality, the body number “268 was found on the inner door panels and padding. The car’s exterior trim, optional wheel rings, side glass and lenses are original as is the vast majority of this 700, including the solid floor pans and factory pinch welds along the rockers. Both bays are very tidy, while the front stores an original date coded wheels, jack and tools. Mechanically, the BMW is quite sound and responsive, shifting is direct. The exhaust and heat exchangers are of original design. A factory-correct wiring harness replaced the original in recent years, along with the complete braking system and regular tune ups. Such examples of these cars are few and far between - Ideal for all around enjoyment, or just a great piece for the avid Bavarian collector as these 700s represent the essence of the modern BMW marque.
