Vehicle Detail
Introduction The Austin A30 was an iconic little vehicle that was designed to replace the wartime Austin 7 . Introduced in 1951 it was known as the Austin A30 Seven and was still fitted with a conventional 800cc side valve engine. An O.H.V. engine of 800c was also available. The body is a monocoque design and was a first for the Austin car Company, quite a change from all previous models that featured the conventional separate chassis construction. Following many iterations, the car evolved into the A35 model in 1956 and was then fitted with the 948cc engine and improved ratio gearbox. The basic vehicle was also available as a van, pick up and the very rare countryman edition. The introduction of “The Mini” led to its eventual demise in the mid 60’s. Description You are looking at a 1958 Austin A35 in very good condition that arrived in the U.S. from England in 2004. I purchased the car in 2009 and have enjoyed many miles of interesting motoring, together with many hours spent putting the car in reliable and roadworthy condition. Records are available from U.K. owners showing a fairly detailed service history and also all expenditures I have incurred during ownership. Work Undertaken has been extensive and I will list the highlights so you can obtain a good description of the vehicle, and maybe pique your interest at the same time. + New Battery fitted in late 2011 + Four new tires were fitted in April 2011 + All five wheels were shot blasted and powder coated in April 2011 + All new brake hoses front and rear together with new brake cylinders. New master cylinders front and back, (Rear has a separate operating system) + Stainless exhaust system + Front and rear seats reupholstered together with new webbing. + Tachometer, oil pressure and voltmeter installed. + Replaced manual fuel pump with new electric system, easily converted back to original system if required. + New petrol/gas tank and piping. + New woolen headliner fitted. + Engine rebuilt with ground crank, “no lead” cylinder head, new water pump and oil pump, new clutch and alloy valve cover. Pistons and bores were well within spec. + Radiator re cored to maintain originality. + New generator, fuse box and voltage regulator fitted. Summary Mechanically this car leaves little to be desired. She fires up first time and runs well. Gearbox and back axle are sound with no odd noises. Synchro works fine on 2, 3 and 4. First is straight cut non sync. Oil leaks? You bet….it is British after all. She has the felt timing chain seal and that weeps. Please remember, this car has a 948cc engine and is very comfortable at about 45 to 50 m.p.h. She will do more when necessary but do not expect to go cruising the Interstate at 70 all day. Paintwork is not show quality but very acceptable. She did take “First in Class” at a local car show in 2011. The monocoque chassis is remarkably rust free, having been treated in the classic British style by having used engine oil sprayed underneath every year. I doubt the E.P.A. in this country would approve!! Certainly appears to have worked as you can see in the photographs. I removed years of accumulation from the front sections to reveal the original primrose paint in great shape. Floors are solid but sills have had a small amount of welding done at front edge. Rear spring hangers, a weak point, have been reinforced. I have tried to convey the good and the bad via word and pictures but you are welcome to email or call me for further details. A visit to see the car in person is always best but if that is not possible, please call and we can discuss in person. Thanks for your interest….
