Vehicle Detail

For sale: 1998 VW Passat GLS 1.8T. Blue w/ Tan Cloth Upholstery. 4 door. 5spd manual. Audi A4 wheels. I originally bought this car to fix up and use as an economical daily driver but I haven’t had the time to complete the project or put the car on the road. Car sells AS-IS because it needs a little bit of work, but it could be a great daily driver for someone who knows VWs and Audis. Specific good and bad points about the car are listed below. The Good: -Has low mileage for its year; (133k for 1998) -Has brand new Pioneer DEH-2400UB AM/FM/CD Player With USB/Iphone®/Ipod®/Mp3/Wma Playback -Brand new front axles(2) -Brand new MagnaFlow Catalytic Converter -Audi A4 wheels -Comes with new Haynes manual for the model as well as a handful of extra, small trim and interior parts that I’ve picked up since I bought it. The Bad: -Body has some cosmetic imperfections (a few small dings and scratches and 3 or 4 dime to quarter sized chips on front of hood) -Interior has some cosmetic imperfections (cloth on door inserts is sagging as is the case with many VW this age; headliner is sagging slightly toward the back but isn’t really bad; driver’s door handle is broken-note: I’ve picked up a black handle from the same year and model as well as a tan door panel from same and any and all parts that I have come free with the car.-O2 sensor is setting off the check engine light. Local auto parts place couldn't tell if it was the pre or post-cat sensor when they scanned it. Might have better luck somewhere else. In any case, it's around $85-110 to fix. -Door speakers were removed by previous owner -Gas door release doesn’t work (could just be a wiring problem or the mechanism itself) -High-beams don’t work for some reason(could just be a wiring issue or a ground)-On steep hills, clutch slips slightly when parked and turned off, so e-brake is necessary. Never slips when driving or shifting though. -Front passenger window motor and both rear window motors do not work. I have picked up the two for the rear from a yard for $20 each and they come with the car. The one for the front should be easy to find and replace for around $20-25. -Unsure of timing belt’s age -IMPORTANT: The oil drain plug is stuck in place and the head is stripped. This might be able to be fixed simple if someone has a tool that can grip it, otherwise a new oil pan from a junkyard could solve the issue. It’s been this way since I bought it in the fall, and this is one of the main reasons this car is selling AS-IS; without being able to verify the quality/condition of the oil, it’s hard for me to know what is going on in the engine. -Sub-note: Relating back to the drain plug, I noticed a small amount of tan foam around the top of the filler cap rim when I checked the oil. This could be one of a few things; I degreased the engine thoroughly when I first bought it, and that could be the issue or it could be getting a small amount of coolant in the oil from somewhere, I’m really not sure. The oil on the dipstick is clean, so your guess is as good as mine. Engine idles very smooth and sounds great though, so it could be nothing. -Lastly, the starter makes a small noise for a split second when first starting the engine. This also only happened after I cleaned the engine, so it could be nothing as well, I just haven’t put any miles on it for it to work any of this stuff out.
