Vehicle Detail
1981 DeLorean in great condition – and RED! As if there was a way to make this rare collectible stand out any more! Gullwing Coupe, Brushed Stainless Steel/Grey underneath the paint, 2.8L PRV V6, and 5 Speed Manual with ~93,000 Original Miles. One look at this excellent '81 DeLorean DMC-12 Gullwing Coupe and you'll be ready to go "Back to the Future." This icon of the 80's has no equal in recognition and you will be hard pressed to find another red DeLorean in such great condition. The gullwing doors serve both functional and fashionable duty, making the car unmistakable and timeless. Your DeLorean features the desirable 5-speed manual transmission. It spent much of its life garaged and covered. Rarely will you ever have the opportunity to purchase such a unique vehicle which is why the DeLorean holds a high place among investors, connoisseurs, and movie lovers everywhere. Facts about the car The brainchild of automotive titan, John Z. DeLorean, the vehicle he envisioned took the best the world had to offer and created a car stylish, rugged, and practical, a sports car for a lifetime and a lifestyle. From Italy, he commissioned designers to draft a super-strong body that would anchor the suspension pieces from England's Lotus division. Its rear engine bay would hold the PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo) 2.8 liter, fuel-injected, V-6, engine. Approximately 9,200 DeLoreans were built before production stopped in late 1982 and it is estimated about 6,500 DeLoreans still exist worldwide. These attributes guarantee a level of exclusivity few cars can match. Combine the excellent condition, timeless stunning looks, and Hollywood fame, and you have a car ripe for future appreciation. The potential for financial appreciation According to London based investment research firm, Historic Automobile Group International, classic cars have appreciated an average of 13-percent per year since 1980 – while stocks averaged 11-percent over the same period. Price DeLorean coupes that are in working condition seem to be selling in the $20,000 to $30,000 range. Fully restored DeLoreans can sell from $45,000 to $60,000 in the US, according to ebay, Hemmings Motor News, Old Car Trader Online, Craigslist and the DeLorean Club Website. This is your opportunity to pick up a reliable DeLorean from a private seller at a very attractive price. Mileage The car has just over 93k miles. Note that having a DeLorean with low miles is NOT a good thing! Low mileage means the car has been sitting in a garage for 20 years without being used. This leads to fuel line corrosion, rust, states of excessive disrepair, and the inability to drive your DeLorean. Any good mechanic will tell you a car that’s been sitting for years without being used is very difficult to restore. These cars have been around for several decades, so having a car with this many miles means one thing – it can be a daily driver! If you want to actually drive your DeLorean, look for one with high mileage. This car is not a large paperweight meant to be looked at in your garage – let people look at it while you drive it down Main Street! Location This car has been located in the Pacific Northwest away from extreme temperatures, hot or cold. Quick specs · Newer tires (~5,000 miles on them) · New Battery · New Coolant tank and hoses · New interior ceiling · New seals on doors · New radio with auxiliary iPhone/iPod/MP3 player jack · 5 Speed Manual · Power windows · Power Door locks · Power mirrors · 4 Wheel Power Disc Brakes · Premium Wheels · No leaks · Never hit or wrecked · Clean title Condition This DeLorean has been upgraded, maintained and regularly serviced by a single mechanic who is very familiar with the car. Fortunately, so many of the issues that affect these cars have already been addressed with this one. Still, it has some chips in the paint, a couple of minor dings, the original seats need to be restored (I was given a quote to do this for $350), the dash needs to be repaired as it has cracked, the air conditioner needs to be serviced/recharged (coolant included with purchase), and the starter needs to be checked out as sometimes you have to turn the engine over a number of times before it cranks. The only serious item that needs to be addressed is the starter which the new owner will want to address, though it can be handled rather easily. The current owner relocated and did not have an opportunity to address this issue before the move. A number of things have been done to this car over the years, but DeLoreans can always use a little more love. Despite these items that need a little work, this is still a stunning and reliable daily driver. Flux capacitor sold separately!
