Vehicle Detail

See Below. Many extra pictures below text in this discription window. For sale is GFT63, a 1931 20/25 Thrupp & Maberly Sport Saloon. This car is in original condition, and may best be described as a “survivor”. It was imported from Scotland in 1968 and found stored in a boathouse in Holland, Mi. in 1969. Little is known of her history, the man who imported her to Michigan moved on to South America the same year. It is known that this car was filled with grandmother clocks and exported to circumvent currency restrictions and to facilitate the immigration of it’s owner. She was driven once or twice a year in the 70’s. Since then it has been in storage until just recently. A terrific RR expert in St. Petersburg, Fl. helped me diagnose, repair and adjust the carburetor. The low speed idle jet adjuster ring had lost grip on the shaft and so no amount of adjustment made any improvement. Once corrected, after all these years, she started and we could hardly believe how beautifully she runs. We drove several miles on her very old tires, everything went very well! A few repairs have been accomplished. The starter brushes needed to be reseated and now work dependably though she needs a new cover for the starter brushes. The exhaust system should be replaced, but essentially she is just as she was when she left Scotland. The body is very solid and she still carries her original paint. Steering, brakes, autovac, 31 point lube system, lights, transmission and clutch work as they should. The generator is not charging and I will leave that to someone more qualified than I. I suspect the generator regulator. The radiator works very well and looks even better, as does all the bright work. She appears to have been driven on a regular basis, accumulating an unknown number of miles, And in the finest Rolls tradition, the quality has carried her through beautifully. There are some paint chips and minor dents from her previous owners, but nothing that could not be corrected. Many car buffs love the patina and say they would not want to repaint her. So you can better see, she has been cleaned and waxed with regular "Maguires wax" to highlight the crackle of this beautiful old paint. Rewaxing with a special "dark drying" wax would make it much less noticeable. Most of the crackle is on the fenders. Some well informed members of the RR Forum have identified the the color as “Chrome Yellow” and black. It is a strikingly beautiful combination and always a crowd pleaser. She is essentially a time capsule, nearly the same as she was half her lifetime ago. The leather, though torn in a few places, is soft and comfortable. The headliner shows her age, but also her character. I particularly like the old campaign buttons someone pinned up near the reading lights, near the liquor cabinet. It is my hope that this car will find an owner that would want to enjoy her for what she is. A survivor and a memory of our history that could grace any collection for endless generations to come. Creased fenders, rakish deco feel and long wheelbase make this an incredible ride. Thrupp & Maberly really made this for the driver. Front seats sit low to the floor for relaxed, long drive comfort. Fortunate, for of course, the old 20/25’s were never the first to arrive…..anywhere. But Ahh……it really is the journey. Everything is just about the way we found it. Amazingly good condition considering her age, We got her started last week and she runs great. Again. A little trivia Wonders of google, researching the license number Nv 940. This registration and so this car, started life in Northamptonshire, in central England. Source http://www.speedyreg.co.uk/history-of-number-plates tells how the old English cars were given their special plates. This excerpt tells us where this car was first registered, as well as how a cars registration history is usually very hard to track down. This article was just a lucky coincidence. Here is an excerpt. “New allocations appeared over quite a long period. During 1931, for instance, Northhamptonshire was just starting to issue NV marks with one or two numbers, NV 9240 not being issued until 1937. Yet, in contrast, authorities in areas with high registration demands Middlesex and Staffordshire, for example were already on the point of exhausting their allocated combinations of one or two letters plus four digits. So, by mid 1932, Staffordshire was already introducing its first plates of three letters and up to three digits, which became the backbone of the registration systems until the mid 1950s.”
