Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 Original Stock Running/Driving Project I’m offering this FJ 40 as an original vehicle ready for restoration. I bought this truck 95% original with just few missing parts. I added all the missing components I had in my parts collection to make it 99% original and complete. It’s getting hard to find any original non-hacked up FJ40’s at this point. My intention was to restore this model year 1974 and take it to California as this is the last emissions exempt year there. This year is emissions exempt in most states, check your state to be sure. 1974 was also the first year for the 4 speed in the FJ40. The 4 speed is a must, converting from a 3 to 4 speed costs thousands as much of the drivetrain needs to be changed. The mechanicals are good in this truck, it does have rust which I will explain in detail. This is a good chance to get a stock FJ40 at a reasonable price. This truck spent 3 weeks in my shop going through minor mechanical fixes to make it drivable, it had been sitting for a few years in a barn. Click or copy and paste the photobucket link below for 97 pictures of this FJ-40 http://s953.beta.photobucket.com/user/fj40man79/library/1974%20Green%20FJ40 MECHANICAL The original F motor is in excellent condition, runs great, no burning oil. Compression is excellent, valves are adjusted. The carburetor has been cleaned out, it is the original. Most all of the engine compartment is original except for the addition of an exhaust header. We rebuilt some of the wheel cylinders and got some others freed up and working, the brakes were bled, stops fine. The 4 speed shifts as it should, the clutch is good. The transfer case shifts well, the mechanical are good in this vehicle. We added and changed out the marginal fluids. I drove this truck a few miles, it did just fine, did not find anything serious that needs attention. Warn 8274 upright winch, this is the winch that costs $2200 new and put Warn on the map, most desired winch out there. The wiring on this one needs to be redone, I do not have the cable controller (new one around $70) but worth rebuilding as they are so much new. BODY All the panels appear to be original to this truck. There is rust in places. The driver floor board needs to be replaced, the rest of the rust issues can be cut out and patched in with sheet metal. The front seats have new foam from SOR, and were just recovered. The rear jump seats are in good condition, not broke like most. The fiberglass top is in good shape, the wheels are the originals with caps. The frame is in excellent condition. The windshield is cracked, the rest of the glass is good. This truck lived in the Seattle area most of it’s life with heavy rain fall, the driver floor got the most of it from the factory mat collecting water. Rain rust differs from east coast salt rust. Salt rust will waste the frame and the entire underside. Rain rust will collect in pools and rust out parts of the body while keeping the frame and other components safe. My opinion is this truck is a good entry level restoration project. The mechanicals are expensive to replace in these trucks, that is all good here, if you have the time to do the rust repair this has the potential to be a nice vehicle worth a fair amount of money on the other end. The most challenging part will be replacing the driver floor pan, cutting and patching the rest is fairly easy just time consuming. So, grab your son or buddies, buy a small MIG welder and cut off wheels and start building something that gives a life time of memories. (There is always a little cussing in any build, but that is part of the fun) The main advantage to a 1974 model year is the 4 speed and the emissions exemption. The main drawback is drum brakes. Disc brakes did not come until 1976, well I have a set of 1976 disc front and drum rear fine spline axles I will sell with this vehicle for $600, the yokes on the 4 speed are the same. The disc axles can only be purchased by a local buyer as these can’t be dropped in the back for transport, or I’ll install them for an additional $250 if you are long distance. Drum brake course spline pre-76 axles are worth nothing, I have stack of them behind my shop. I do not have time to do any additional work to this truck other than the axles. I offer delivery on this vehicle up to 300 miles from Pasco WA at $1.50 a loaded mile. Vehicle and fuel cost must be paid before it leaves my property. I have a clean clear WA state title in hand. I have two shipping brokers, I will put you in contact with them or work with your shipper. I’ll listen to serious offers, reserve will not be disclosed. In the next 1-2 weeks the finest FJ45 short bed truck and 1983 FJ45 Troopy will be for sale on eBay. These are the finest cruisers in the world.
