Vehicle Detail

Dodge Viper GTS, Pristine low mileage original Steel Gray Pearlcoat, no stripes, with Cognac Connolly leather option, one of 38 in this combination. (Source: International Viper Registry.) Just 18,255 very finicky miles, every service done, every oil change, no paintwork, no track time, supremely maintained. Virtually 100% stock with only sensible upgrades performed, retaining original parts. The car is part of a small 8-car collection, always garaged, always serviced and detailed. Just had a Pre-Purchase Inspection done at the Dodge dealer who has serviced the car for the past 5 years I've owned it. Passed completely, with only a single bushing from the rear sway bar link on the passenger side 'slightly' fatigued from age. "Have never seen a 12 year old car this nice" said the service writer. Engine, transmission: Car starts on first twist of key every time, idles smoothly, holds full oil pressure. The 450 horse engine is an absolute delight, thoroughly reliable, smooth, and even returns decent road mileage as 70 mph is only about 1500 rpm in 6th gear. I get about 21 mpg with a light foot on the road. Engine is basically stock except for K&N filter and ‘smooth tubes’ to provide greater air flow. Stock parts saved. To combat factory plug wire breakdown, installed 1200 degree high energy 8mm plug wires from Quality Wires. Stock parts saved. Removed stock “overheating” prone cats that burn the sill paint with lower restriction metal cats and discreet stainless vents to aid flow. Problem solved. The exhaust is also perfectly pitched to my ear, and sounds far better than stock yet not remotely obnoxious. Car shifts through the gears perfectly. Clutch uptake is firm. I do NOT do donuts or burnouts or whatever “hard driving” in the car. I’m a fan of using a car as intended, but with a preservation mindset. The car runs and drives exquisitely with no known mechanical needs. Interior – The Connolly leather upgrade is a nice addition to the otherwise kind of plain Viper interior. The seats, door panels, dash, headliner, console are all in excellent condition. I replaced the stock big plastic HVAC switches with billet aluminum knobs (kept originals) which improve the looks and feel. The shift knob had a slight amount of wear, so I had Cognac water based dye matched and redyed it. Looks factory fresh now. I recently purchased new factory cognac mats (hard to find) which renewed the interior even further. Vipers do not come with cupholders, so I installed an easily removed one in the console which folds completely out of the way and is invisible when not needed. Replaced wimpy factory horns with Italian 2-tone horns (Griot’s Garage) in stock discreet location. (Kept originals.) All gauges work perfectly, the air blows ice cold, power mirrors, windows all work as new. All glass is perfect, unscratched, clear. In the photo of the passenger side seat, yes that is the original Daimler-Chrysler plastic covering protecting the sill. I just never took it off. Stereo is the original factory single CD unit, works perfectly. Replaced cheap factory speakers with upgraded Quartz speakers in factory locations. Not one thing was cut. Added Dynamat for heat and sound insulation in trunk/tire well. Brakes, suspension, steering, tires – Everything is in proper order here and has been Viper-Tech serviced. I added aluminum power steering pulley to replace failure prone factory plastic units. (Kept original.) Car has stock suspension which was detailed (shocks, springs, brake calipers, wheelwells) when the PS2s were put on. Michelin Pilots - the most expensive and in my opinion ‘best’ tires - were installed just 3,000 miles ago on the front and 200 miles ago on the rear. Plenty of tread life and another expense you don’t have to worry about. (A Viper needing tires – quite common – can mean a $1500 expense.) Wheels are super clean, no curb rash, have Viper valve stem caps and centers painted in Viper red relief. Okay, I was bored. Exterior – Car stays detailed and indoors. Factory Steel Gray pearlcoat is beautiful front to rear. Some minor pips on front end and beneath spoiler area. (Installed chin guard protection to aid low front end.) The car shines beautifully, even inside door jambs, and in engine/sill area. The color suits this car perfectly. I greatly prefer the ‘non stripe’ cars, since a Viper doesn’t really need any help grabbing attention. The car is currently detailed, including the factory polished wheels, awaiting a new owner. A shot of the front passenger side wheelwell shows the original inspection sticker still intact. Extras, stuff - Car comes with original Window Sticker, original books, tags, manuals, folders, factory Viper tire cover, factory Viper car cover (embroidered), and factory Viper cover bag. Also has the original spare, jack, and bag for jack. Summary – This car has been outstanding. Always trustworthy, I’ve taken it on several trips, always gets thumbs up on the road. It is a comfortable cruiser, easy to live with, and fast as the blazes. It can rocket to 80 mph in 3rd gear without breathing hard, and onto 192 in 6th (but not with me in it!). The car is amazingly competent in all regards. It just as much fun to run through the gears as it is raising the hood at the gas station for the fans. To my eye, the Viper GTS is one of the best looking American cars ever made. It has the unmistakable profile of the Daytona Cobra coupe, yet the aggressive Viper stance that means business. This car will become a sought after American classic, and probably reward the patient long term owner with a significant financial gain. As I write this, I almost can’t believe I’m selling this car, but am making room for a new toy. The reserve on this car is low enough that it will sell to highest bidder. If not, the dealer has offered me enough to cover it versus the Ford GT I'm getting. In other words, bid to own this car now or expect it to be $3,800 more at the dealer, your choice. I would recommend flying in and driving home, but truck delivery is an option too. This car should make the new owner very happy.
