Vehicle Detail
1968 Plymouth GTX This is a rare find for all of you Mopar lovers out there! Doesn't every Mopar guy want a GTX in his collection?? This Plymouth is an original Matador red car that was ordered from the factory with air conditioning, bucket seats, and a console. This sweet red machine was purchased brand new in California. The Certicard from the Chrysler Corporation is still in the glovebox with the original owners manual, and the customer care warranty to prove that to be factual. This car was recently purchased in June from the son who inherited the car from his parents in 2001 after they both passed. It had been in the same family since the early 1970's. The parents lived in California when they first bought the car, then moved to Arkansas, so the floors, trunk, and undercarriage are all rock solid. I believe anyone who would look at the undercarriage of this car would think it looks like a car that was only 5 or 10 years old. It is that clean!! This awesome old classic never saw any of the harsh Midwest winters, and was in the same family for over 40 years, so it's almost an original owner car. He said his parents always kept this car in the garage, so he did the same. He also said it was never used as the primary mode of transportation for their family. It was always used as a secondary car, so that's why the low mileage reflects that statement. It was recently painted in basecoat/clearcoat to make it resemble a GTX model. The white side stripes, and the black hood scooped portion were both painted on as well. This body was virtually free of any rust prior to this current paintwork. Some people might consider this paint job show quality. I personally do not, but it does appear very nice. The hood is a real GTX hood, and the front/side emblems are factory originals. I'm sure all Mopar guys know that all GTX's came with either a 440 or a 426 Hemi. This engine has been meticulously detailed recently to make it look like a true GTX. No one has to know it was simply made to look like one except the new owner and me, and my lips are sealed. I tried to replace all of the missing decals to make this Plymouth look as if it were rolling out of the factory onto the showroom floor back in 1968. According to the son nearly every component on this car is original including the numbers matching engine that was re-built within the last 20,000 miles. All of the chrome trim is in place, and appears as drivers quality or better. A brand new triple plated chrome rear bumper was just installed after the new paint. This car came with a folder full of receipts and paperwork to help verify this car spent the majority of its life down south. Many interior items have been replaced over the past several years. The new carpet was ordered from The Paddock in 2004, and installed at that time, along with a new headliner, new door window hardware, both outside door handles, and some new window rollers. As seen in the pictures, the interior is in very good condition. A set of four brand new cushy premium floor mats were just added. In 2003 the seats were all redone with new material from Legendary interiors. Also changed in 2003 were the pillar seals, door end seals, door openings, wind gaskets, and the glass channel runs from Year One. The head lights, bright lights, tail lights, brake lights, interior lights, license plate light, and even the trunk light all work as they should. The wiper blades were just replaced. The speedometer works well, but the gas gauge is not working at this time. Although an aftermarket gas gauge is hooked up under the left side of the dash. The dash pad has no cracking, and all the windows are in good condition. The side windows all roll up and down good. There is an aftermarket stereo with some Pioneer speakers in the rear, but is not hooked up. It may work fine, but was not inspected. I figured the new owner will want to look for a factory original to put back in its place. I believe this car was ordered with an original AM radio, but that radio is long gone. The musical choice will be left for the next owner. I don't know Mopars all that well, but I'm pretty sure all of the air conditioning parts are all in the proper places. The a/c dryer was missing, so a brand new one was ordered for the next owner to install. It is shown inside the trunk. It will be up to the winning bidder to put a new belt on the compressor, and charge the freon to see if they will have ice cold air conditioning. The compressor does spin freely. There is a newer radiator, but the numbers matching original radiator comes with the car. This numbers matching engine starts right up and runs awesome. The transmission was just re-built last week with all new gaskets and fluid. My mechanic, who has been a great personal friend for over 40 years, and owned his own transmission shop for over 20 years, made the comment how incredible the undercarriage looks on this car, and could not believe how solid it is. I believe anyone who gets this car will be equally impressed. The oil and oil filter were just changed in preparation for this sale. This car has power steering, and drives straight down the road. The tires are raised white lettered 235 70R/14 inch Firestone S/S Radials with decent tread. They are mounted on a set of four Magnum 500 wheels with all four centers, and beauty trim rings. This particular size tire really makes this bad boy stand out and make people take notice! The original trunk pan was detailed, and carries a like new trunk mat with a newer never used spare tire. This Mopar factory jack was restored, and even has the original longer bent crow bar. You really have to be prepared to be the center of attention in your neighborhood when driving this cool old classic. You have to be an extrovert to drive a car like this, because everywhere you drive it people want to wave and talk about this car. The Nada Classic Car price guide has the latest values listed online for the 1968 Plymouth GTX at $75,300 in high condition, $47,550 in average condition, and $27,750 in low condition. I know the Sport model is substantially lower, but this car looks as close to being a true GTX as you can get without paying those crazy high prices. This model came ordered with the most attractive color red, and it's a true bucket seat, console car. The majority of these cars had bench seats making this one even more desirable. What you see is exactly what you get! An exhorbitant amount of time, money, and effort went into making the car that is listed in this auction. These cars have been known to consistently rise in value. Here is a prime opportunity to own a piece of classic Mopar muscle car history at a nominal price. This car is for the Mopar lover that had one in high school, and would love to rekindle those great memories or just cruise around and finally be a part of the local car show circuit. I tried to shoot as many pictures as I could to show all the angles possible of this classic B-Body. I want to insure every potential bidder makes the most informed decision they can before they place their bid. I also try to list everything I can think of when I write a description. Please ask if there is anything else you might like to know. I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. This is a "No Reserve" auction that will sell to the highest bidder on Sunday evening at 5pm Pacific time, 7pm Central time, and 8pm Eastern time. Make sure to get all of your bids entered prior to the start of the Sunday Night Football game between the Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49er's. This way there is something to talk about and look at during halftime with your friends. Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!
