Vehicle Detail
For Sale 1959 F-100 4X4 Long Bed Step Side For sale is my sons 1959 Ford F-100. This truck had an amateur restoration done back in 1994. My Father-in-Law ("Poppy") owned a garage in California and wanted to do something unique for his only grandson, my son Bryce. The truck was in pretty rough shape when Poppy bought it from one of his mechanics, so he figured he would try his hand at a basic, mechanical restoration. The motor was tired and the truck was missing some dash components so Poppy found a buried 1960 crew cab in a junk yard outside of Barstow and drug it back to the shop as a parts donor. What Poppy did was strip the truck to individual pieces, inspect, clean, sand and paint everything from the frame up. A few knobs and, I believe the instrument cluster as well, were pulled from the '60, and I think he also used the motor from the '60. Both trucks had identical 292 "Y"-blocks, but one was much tighter than the other, and I think that was the one from the '60. Tranny and transfer case were gone through, "U"-joints were all replaced, bad wires were replaced where needed, etc.... Poppy also did the body work, replaced all of the wood in the bed, and had the diamond plate bed liner made. He spent almost a year on this and when he was done, everything worked. He then gave it to my son, who was 2 years old. Pictures below are from mid 1995 Poppy drove it for a couple of years before we lost him suddenly. The truck than sat under a mulberry tree for a few years before Bryce and I were able to bring it back to Colorado. Once in Colorado, the condition of the wood in the bed was discovered (the bed was full of rotted mulberry leaves) and some of the rust spots were uncovered. We were both happy to see that the interior was still in great shape. So that is the history that I know. Unfortunately, back injuries prevent me from working on the truck and Bryce is in college. If I had a place to store the truck outside of the elements, we would never consider parting with it, but reality being what it is, our choice is to let the truck be destroyed by the elements or find someone who wants to keep it alive and will appreciate it. Bryce and I both believe that this is what Poppy would want. The truck starts and runs great. It is by no means a power house as it is still sporting a 52-53 year old stock motor, but the motor starts on the first crank almost every time, is smooth and does not smoke. I have driven it and have not noticed any leaks. The lights and wipers work. All of the gauges work (speedometer, fuel, temperature and both idiot lights). Clutch is smooth. Transmission is solid. Transfer case works. 4 wheel drive works. Door locks work. Even the turn signals cancel. The only thing that I know of that doesn't work is the radio. You can spin the knob and watch the needle turn, but that's it. Poppy installed an after market stereo under the dash so as not to impact the actual dash cosmetics, but I don't believe that works because someone stole the speakers he had sitting under the bench seats a long time ago. Tires that were on it were dry rotted, so it now has almost $1000 worth of brand new rubber (33x12.5x15) with under 100 miles. New Holley Carburetor was installed (the old one was leaking) along with a new fuel pump. Coolant changed. Oil and filter new. Spent an additional $900 (below) to ensure the truck was safe and road worthy: Entire brake system was inspected and wheel cylinders were rebuilt or replaced where needed, shoes replaced and adjusted. Brake master cylinder was replaced. Clutch master cylinder was rebuilt. Wiper pivot arm was replaced and new blades installed. Basic Specs: 292CI Y-block V-8. Heavy Duty top loading Warner T98 4 speed manual transmission. Dana/Spicer 24 divorced transfer case. Ford 9" rear end. Dana/Spicer 44 front differential. Manual 4 wheel drum brakes. There is a lot of light surface rust and some paint chips. There is also a larger amount of rust where the rear lower panel bolts to the bed. A bed full of rotted mulberry leaves will do that. I also noted some cancer starting at the bottom of the passenger door. I tried to capture all of the bad spots with photos so there are no surprises. Other than that, the truck appears to be in great shape for a vehicle of its age. This is the only long bed, step side 4x4 that I have ever come across.
