Vehicle Detail

1985 Ford Mustang SSP (Special Service Package) Notchback / Sedan / Coupe 5.0 CHP Vehicle #: E408419 Actual former California Highway Patrol (CHP) car Hardtop, Notchback / Sedan, T-5 manual transmission, less than 118k miles Clean California title - Check out the pictures below! If you are a fan of Fox-body Mustangs, you'll love this car on a lot of levels: One of 155 1985 Mustangs purchased by the California Highway Patrol Rare, original "survivor" SSP notch that hasn't been raced or modified The following items are present / included that are part of 8419's history: Buck tags DSO sticker Paint marker number identifying "8419" still visible on driver's door Original CHP assignment card Actual original Ford invoice ("Eminger" invoice) Registration "Police" noted as history on clean California title (aka pink slip) "Police" noted as history on California registration Desireable notchback / coupe / sedan aka "notch" body style Nearly bone stock, original tags all over 1985 was the first year for the roller 5.0 V8 (210hp) Last year of the carbureted Mustangs (Holley 4180 4-barrel) Spotlights, whip antenna, and rooftop antenna installed in original locations Recent white over black paint pays tribute to the car's history Lots of fun to drive, and the crowd at cars shows love it Maybe you remember getting pulled over by one of these? There is a great community for 4-eyed, Fox-body Fords, check out foureyedpride.com There is also a great community of SSP enthusiasts. Check out sspmustang.org and specialservicemustang.net Please scroll down for pictures, info and history. I've done a lot of work to this car. Video here: http://youtu.be/dsmtlwzMTs8 http://youtu.be/REYZY8CtE8Y The reason I'm selling is that space and work to the house have become a priority. I would be willing to meet an out-of-town buyer at LAX or any other LA-area airport. It's okay if buyer wants to have the car transported, but I'll need full payment before I let the car go. Frequently Asked Questions about CHP 8419: Where did it serve? CHP 8419 saw regular duty chasing drug-runners and speeders along the California/Mexico border, and was based at the California Highway Patrol's El Centro Border Division Office #625, in Imperial County. When and how long was CHP 8419 in service? The car was in service from May 23, 1986 to May 10, 1988, covering 85,414 miles during that time. Why is there a rectangular hole in the lower-right of the front bumper? This is where the siren was mounted. Are the colors and equipment I see on the car the same as when it was in service? Original colors also included white doors (as well as CHP graphics/ID information on the doors and trunk edge). Antennas are similar to the original pieces used. Original spotlights used were a CHP-specific version of the Unity S6, with black housings, white bulbs and lenses on the passenger's side and a steady-burn, ruby-red light on the driver's side. This ruby red spotlight was what you'd see while being pulled over. Additional equipment included police radio, scanner, siren, trunk-mounted shotgun, Grote PAR 46 deck lights in amber, red and blue, as well as other equipment. What does SSP mean? Special Service Package DashTop dash cap looks and fits great over the original dashpad. The odometer just stopped working about 50 miles ago. During my entire ownership of the car, I've driven it very little (after paint, it pretty much became a garage queen). A really nice SSP enthusiast got me the car's original SSP assignment card. (These go with the car.) I was able to get the original invoice for the car through a company that acquired a warehouse full of Ford invoices (aka "Eminger invoice." The scanned copy is below... Below are the car's Special Service "buck tags." SSP vehicle numbers were marked with a paint pen. You can still read "8419" through the latest paint. Hub covers / hub caps: the cars currently wears former Escort caps on the left (they look more like the shiny caps the 1986 SSP wore, but don't fit all that well on the front because of the protruding hub). However, the car will also come with its 4 original caps (pictured on right). If there is a California buyer, and they want to retain the personalized license plate, I have the paperwork to do that. DMV fees are paid, but the car is currently on non-op status. The car will need to be smogged before registration can be renewed in California. Please note that the rooftop antenna is mounted very temporarily. I usually just put both antennas on for shows and pictures. Engine is very strong and very responsive. Sometimes there is a hesitation under hard throttle (maybe an accelerator pump?) The car steers well, brakes stop the car fine, but are a bit soft, shifter is a Hurst and shifts great (the best Fox-body shifter I've yet to experience). . The quarter window trim installation was not done correctly. I have some of the original clips. I will include these as well as other extra items with the car. Ford emblems are brand new, front and rear. Car needs a new headliner (although I think I have the dome light lens). The shifter is a Hurst, with short, positive throws. It's the best-feeling shifter of any Fox-body car I've driven. The picture on the right is the front passenger's door seam, (the paint is a little rough along the door edge). The car has A/C, and the compressor rotates at the pulley, but I don't think it works. The radio is an old-school radio/cassette unit. Without a traditional antenna, it gets poor reception. Re-located trunk release button (yellow) is another signature change for SSP Mustangs. SSP's had a cover for the stock antenna location. I had not yet located one (or made one). The right picture is for the license plate lights. I don't remember whether or not I have the lenses for these. Regardless, a box of miscellaneous SSP items I have will go with the car. I have the original fifth steel SSP wheel (with what I think is Goodyear Gatorback tire). The spare tire you see here is a Mustang GT turbine wheel I put in (that Gatorback is seriously old). If the new owner drives the car away, I will include it with the car. Good luck bidding! This car has the spirit and bodystyle of a Mustang LX coupe / notch / sedan 5.0 with the hardware of a Mustang GT. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I can be reached at gomr2 at yahoo.com Buyer responsible for any shipping. If a buyer is flying in from out of town, I can meet you at LAX. Cash only to complete the transaction. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time On Aug-14-12 at 18:55:23 PDT, seller added the following information: In answering some of the questions I've received so that everyone looking can benefit, I'll restate my answers here: I do not consider the paint to be "show quality," although it looks really good (and has been color sanded and buffed, and was garage-kept). I tried to post large pictures to show the car as well as I could. Some of the door seals (rubber and felt) are broken or worn. The carpet has stains, but is original (see pictures above). I haven't used the HVAC system (I only drove the car very locally and to local shows). The windshield washer reservoir is old and brittle. Keep in mind that this car is basically original (and keep it's age in mind), remember that it has not not been restored, and is NOT PERFECT, and you probably have a good idea of what to expect in person. On Aug-18-12 at 11:09:16 PDT, seller added the following information: Someone said that they might want to try and locate some of the things that are not included with the car, but were mentioned in the ad as additional items the CHP cars used while in-service, such as the ruby red spotlight,  police radio, scanner, siren, trunk-mounted shotgun, Grote PAR 46 deck lights in amber, red and blue (and their brackets), as well as other equipment.   The best advice I have for either the new owner of this car or any other SSP owners trying to find original CHP equipment (or the equipment any other law-enforcement agency that used Mustangs) to refer to the SSP Mustang enthusiast community at the 2 web sites I mentioned above in the listing: sspmustang.org and/or specialservicemustang.net.   Of course, you might also find these items on eBay or other sites, too.
