Vehicle Detail

UP FOR BID BOHEMIAN ESCAPEE! RARE LATE COMMUNIST CAR WITH USA TITLE! Up for bid WITH NO RESERVE is my 1987 Skoda 120 GLS Sedan. It is best thought of as a complete parts car, mostly because of my impression that it would have only a modest value in good condition that would not justify restoration. A dedicated preservationist or movie car rental company might justify a 'cheap, so-so' restoration to save the car. It is a very ecclectic car, being built in Mlada Boleslav, Czechoslovakia, during the Communist era (built in 9/1986). Almost everything about the car is designed backwards from the typical small western car of the time. It has an 1,174cc, 58 HP, water-cooled inline four cylinder OHV engine mounted in the rear. It has a nice alloy block with wet sleeves, finned alloy oil sump and cast iron head! It has a Jikov 32 SEDR 2-barrel carburetor and PAL ignition. It has a 5-speed transaxle, swing-axle rear and unequal-length A-arm front suspension and non-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes. The bonnet is hinged on its D/S edge so that it opens from the curb side, ala Lancia Fulvia Zagato Sport! The car is maroon faded to brown with black interior, the cloth seats having white stripes. It would be a fun car to drive if saved because these cars with their rear engine, 5-speed transaxle, light weight and unassisted rack and pinion steering provide a feel closer to that of an early Porsche 911 than any other modern car. I bought this car in December, 1992, from the original owners who had bought it new in Red Deer, Alberta, and later brought it to Tulsa, OK. I drove it for two years at which time it blew its head gasket, and it has been parked outside ever since. I bought a new head gasket set, which will be included with the car, and started the repair by removing the head. I started thinking that the rust in its longitudinal frame rails was getting bad enough that the car might not be safe to drive until the rust was repaired, so I just put a plastic cover over the top of the engine block and put the project on the back burner where it has remained to this day. A late rear-engined Skoda with 5-speed gearbox and a USA TITLE being somewhat unique in this country, I could never bear to part with her, but loss of storage now dictates that I must. IMPORTANT NOTE: The CORRECT VIN number of this car is TMB12MGLSH3351770. It is a Federal-style 17-digit VIN, but eBay's computer would not accept it, so in order to get this sale listed I had to enter a valid USA VIN of a totally unrelated car (a 1987 Volvo) in the VIN box above. This is certainly not an attempt to mislead anyone. The VIN listed here is the correct VIN originally assigned to and stamped on the car and shown on the Oklahoma Title. For those who might be interested in restoring her, I will try to describe the condition of her body and cosmetics in some detail. She has never been badly wrecked or repainted, but will need quite a bit of rust repair before she would be ready to paint. She has serious rust in several isolated areas, but NO RUST in most of the floor pan, the front and rear lower valence panels, the front bottoms of the front fenders and the rear bottoms of the rear fenders. Although the left front floor pan is there, it is very weak and floppy because its outer (driver side) edge is completely rusted loose from the D/S longitudinal frame rail. That is where the rust is really bad: in the rocker panels and outer longitudinal frame rails. A lot of what you see peeling and hanging down from the floor is undercoating. There is not much upper body rust, except surface rust where the paint is completely gone, as on the roof. There is rust in the lower rear part of the D/S rear wheel arch. There is a small wrinkled-up area at the front end of the P/S front fender near the parking light. I have a new P/S half of the grille and a P/S parking light lens somewhere. If I can find it, its yours - if not, I can't promise it. The head, manifolds, pushrods, carb., etc. are in the trunk (I know all the engine parts are complete). I do have the owner's manual and factory service manual, and both are in English. I also have the hardest to find part of any late Skoda in the U.S.A.: an American (Oklahoma) Title. As you can see from the pix of the trunk, the car was originally maroon. The trunk floor is fine. The original black w/white stripes cloth seat upholstery is rotten with age and tears easily, and would have to be redone. The front seats are covered with fake sheepskin covers. The foam is okay. The headliner, door panels, dash top and headrests are all pretty good. The windshield is cracked in the lower middle area; the other glass is good. The brake system would have to be completely rebuilt. All four tires are awful, but two tires are still holding air. All window regulators, door handles and latches, and trunk and hood latches work with the exception that the left rear outside door handle is broken. The odometer reads "15,410" KM (really 115 KKM), but it is inop - the plastic odo cable drive gear in the transmission is broken. The car will roll freely. The blower fan and wipers worked when parked. It comes with three sets of original keys. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: There is NO RESERVE PRICE for this auction. We will not end this sale early.
