The Avanti Advantage...Most agree that the Studebaker Avanti was ahead of the times. Two model years, 1963-64, are essentially the same with the distinction that the favored R2 model has the Paxton supercharger. The fiberglass body design has no straight lines. (Thank you Raymond Loewy.) The Avanti's nose down, tail-up stance looks fast at rest. Driver impressions are about good acceleration, no lean cornering, firm suspension, responsiveness and a delight to drive. It has front disc brakes and and a (hidden) roll bar. All this performance with four comfortable seats. However, this is a fifty-year-old car. My Avanti is a 1964 R2 with power assists and the three speed automatic floor shift I prefer. The factory window sticker lists a $5346 price. Mine is gold with a deep red interior. Both have been redone and I rate them nine. No hidden flaws. Mechanically everything works (ex RPM); driven over 200 miles in recent months. There are new parts such as a battery, brakes and dual exhausts. Comes with the Owner's Manual and Shop/Parts DVD. Odometer shows 77850. Engine was rebuilt at 60K miles. It is basically an original, unmodified Avanti which looks very good. At 70 MPH the sound you hear is the roar of the exhaust and the whine of the supercharger. A plaque reminds us to keep the windows up over 120 MPH.
