Vehicle Detail
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle is for sale in several markets and the seller reserves the right to end this listing at any time should the vehicle no longer be available for sale. BASICS: This 1952 MG-TD was originally ordered and purchased by the first owner at a Hollywood Dealer in 1952. The second current owner purchased the vehicle from the original owner on November 27, 1978. With all documentation available and by discussing with those familiar & servicing the vehicle over the years, the odometer total mileage is accurate at 19316. The trip odometer is accurate to the mileage since the restoration at 581. When the vehicle is purchased, there may be a few more miles – but we are only talking 15 to 50 miles. RESTORATION: The second current owner received the car in original condition with a few modifications – those being a paint color change and upholstery color-dye change. The current owner ordered a restoration by “Mike Goodman’s MG Service” of Van Nuys, California (Los Angeles area) in October of 1983. Mike Goodman, until his retirement a few years ago, was considered one of the best service and restoration facilities in North America and worldwide. Before Moss Motors even began business, Mike had one of the best stocked collections of original and factory parts. He was also considered one of the authorities on maintenance and restorations in the world. His customer list reads like a “Who’s Who” list of collectors and proud owners of Classic MGs. If you call Moss Motors and mention Mike Goodman, they will know him. The entire car was dismantled down to the chassis. All metal body parts were acid stripped, parking lot dents hammered out, no bondo was used only some minor surface filler, if required metal work was straightened/reformed, and finally an acrylic primer & color finish of Sherwyn Williams paint was applied. The chassis and mechanicals were thoroughly gone through and necessary repairs/replacements were performed. The brake system was overhauled, the master cylinder was rebuilt, front shock/dampers replaced and the rears rebuilt. The electrical systems were repaired/replaced as needed and a manual turn-signal switch added under center-dash to aid in daily driving. At the time of the electrical work, the generator was rebuilt. The interior body seats and panels were newly fabricated with leather and new carpet installed all to factory specifications. Also a new canvas soft top was fabricated along with a tonneau cover and matching fabric was installed to the existing side-curtains… all to factory spec. The engine was partially torn down and overhauled. It was not really required but the car had been ordered with a high-performance engine upgrade that was not really necessary. The main components were; domed racing pistons, heavier crankshaft with associated bearings and harder valves. Mike Goodman pointed out and suggested that the pistons should be changed to standard flat-tops because the gasoline octane in the USA was dropping below 100 and the dome pistons would not react well to this lower octane level and thusly begin to fail. This would of course become detrimental to the entire engine. The pistons were replaced with one of the last set of factory pistons available, the crankshaft was polished only, any suspect bearings replaced and the valves polished & reseated. The cooling system was in great shape and only a chemical flush was performed for good measure. The starter motor was checked, cleaned and lubricated. The transmission & clutch had a major servicing and the rear-end was inspected, cleaned and lubricated. Any bright-work chrome that was not able to be polished-out was re-chromed and several pieces replaced with original parts (only a few after-market Moss Motors parts used). Also any fittings, bolts, nuts, washers, screws that were not of quality or correct were replaced. The entire car received a new rubber kit. All hoses requiring attention were replaced with new modern rubber which reacts better to environmental conditions today. Except for the optional engine work, the restoration was mostly of a maintenance and cosmetic nature since the car was kept in very good driving condition & maintenance over the years. After the main restoration, a few items were refinished; the generator case, the horn cases and the air filter case were refinished in black powder-coat for durability. The original and current color scheme is; Body = Autumn Red, Interior = Tan/Biscuit. VEHICLE HISTORY: The original owner ordered and purchased the vehicle new as a weekend touring fun car and used it occasionally for some daily driving. Apparently he was advised by someone to order the high-performance mods for better freeway driving – this was not required as the car runs strong and fast. After some years, the MG became more of a second car for his wife while doing errands around Beverly Hills. Soon it became just an occasional driver for them both. They were approached by a TV production company to rent the car as a drivable vehicle for the hit TV show “Eight Is Enough” where the new wife/mother of the family brought it with her into the marriage. Now if you know the show, you are probably saying, “the car in the show was green” and you’d be right. The show producers upon casting the car had decided that they would prefer it was “British Racing Green”. The owners allowed the color change to acquire the rental contract which had renewed their interest in the car. The MG was over-painted green and the upholstery was dyed black. The car was used on the show weekly but only driven about 30 minutes a week. Most of the time it sat in the driveway or in front of the location home, and was actually just driven to location and back to the garage. Although it was seen in the show opening sequence for quite a few years, it was actually returned to the owners about 1-1/2 years into the contract. The producers had their stock footage to use forever and since they were responsible for the safety, servicing and maintenance of the car while they had it, most likely it was a budget choice to cancel the rental contract. Mike Goodman’s garage was the mechanic in charge of the car during this contract time. During the TV life of the TD, the original owner had passed and the car became his wife’s property. When it was returned to her and was no longer earning income, she shortly decided to sell the MG. There was not much interest in the car when the second current owner discovered it. This second owner was advised as to the feasibility of restoring the MG-TD back to its’ original glory since it was already a very solid and well maintained car mechanically. The current owner made a deal and purchased the green MG and began to drive it as a daily driver for several years. When it was purchased by the current owner it was nick named “Amelia” since the current owner was an “Amelia Earhart” fan. In 1983, after the children came (TDs are not children friendly beyond one child), the second owner ordered a restoration by Mike Goodman. The main decision was how far to go and to what specifications. After several consults and some research, mostly regarding colors, it was decided to take Amelia back to her original factory delivered splendor. After the restoration the TD was mainly driven occasionally on weekends and taken to car rallys/meets. In 1992, the car was basically garaged permanently in a proper manner – only being run on occasion for good maintenance and to keep it in good order. Recently, the current owner decided that someone should get to enjoy the MG, and the MG should get to enjoy the road more. A few days of proper revival and care and Amelia is back. A new battery was fitted, new plugs, new fluids and proper breaking-in of the engine was executed. The brakes and other safety feature were inspected and she has been driven around the neighborhood a dozen times. As soon as it came out of the garage, the 52 MG-TD began turning heads and creating excitement, in Hollywood yet - not to mention the car has a new camera life as people take pictures constantly. We have taken pictures of nearly all aspects of the TD and also have a short video of it being driven so you can see and hear her. Much care was taken in the photos to get accurate color but please be aware that computer monitors are not good or set-up well for perfect color rendition. If you are not familiar with the MG colors of "Autumn Red" (body) or "Tan/Biscuit" (interior), think of the red being a darker red similiar to a claret wine and the Biscuit is a medium tan color. SALE TERMS: Ask questions only of you are a seriously interested buyer. But please do any ask questions before placing a bid - and if you require an inspection, it will be at your cost at an agreed time by the seller, and any seller costs incurred will be paid for in advance. The balance of payment (including any applicable fees and taxes) will be delivered within 5 business days (7 days total) of auction close. There are no scratches in the body paint finish - what is seen in a few shots are the reflections off the paint finish of other parts/items (ie; headlamp components, surrounding scene items, etc). There have been maybe 2-3 very small paint nicks touched-up by the body shop.
