Vehicle Detail

Early 1965 Porsche 911 VIN # 300278 Production History: Porsche 911 #278 is the 60th oldest known existing 911 (and 901), and the second oldest car produced in 1965. She was the fifth 911 of nine to roll off the assembly line on January 14, 1965 according to the factory build sheet for the day (I have a copy of this). #278 was originally delivered to Glockler Porsche in Frankfurt, Germany on March 1, 1965, according to the original Kardex build sheet. I have a high resolution scan of the Kardex. Interesting notes on the Kardex indicate the trouble they were having with this car's self-lubricating Solex camshafts, explaining the delay in delivery. Specifications: According to the Kardex, 300278 left the factory with engine #900765, color: baliblau 6142A (Bali Blue), interior: Kunstl.rot (Red Vinyl), Radio #284 (Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM/FM/SW) , and a Webasto heater. Owner History: The owner from 1972 until 2011 was a mechanic and the owner of a small general auto repair shop in San Diego. He drove the car as a daily driver in San Diego until 1986. It was stored indoors from that point with an occasional run around the block until I bought it in 2011. I intended to restore the car fully, but this early build number 911 deserves a more expensive restoration than I can afford to give it. Documents: Original purchase document from 1972 Original 1972 registration card with 545 DZF as the license plate Registration cards for most years until 1986. Maintenance log kept by the mechanic owner A high resolution photocopy of the small 1972 California "pink slip" title which I had to turn in to the DMV when I got the title transferred into my name. A high resolution photo of the original Kardex build sheet. A rare 1965 full color brochure in English about the newly introduced Porsche 911. Specification booklet for 1965 Photo of the car from 1972 when the previous owner bought it. 1965 service book No owners manual or other documents Unique early-build parts on #278: Aluminum frame wood steering wheel Raised engine grille which is 20mm thick, as seen on the 901 cars. Rubber lip on the trailing edge of the decklid. Window frames on both doors are flared on the trailing edge and have two screws holding the vent window frame Five dash buttons, one on passenger side and two groups of 2 centered from the middle Cast bronze four screw grill with three center fins machined (you can still see the grind marks in corners) ATE Dunlop stamped on the rear calipers Washer bottle/bag behind the right rear wheel arch Nadella rear axles Original solid black shift knob with no shift pattern Original leather shift boot (still looks mint!) Flat knee bar (does not go up on each side of the dash) Unique door latch mechanism Body Condition: A California car since 1972, the car is amazingly free of rust for an early '65. There is some rust under the battery tray on the drivers side near the torsion bar mount, however the battery tray in the trunk is undamaged because the plastic battery covers were intact (see photos) The only other areas of rust are around the jack tube and the surrounding rocker panel and doorjamb box area, but even this is not extensive as you can see in the photographs. Original undercoating in most areas including the floorpan. No rust holes anywhere in the floorpan, back seat area, and rear torsion bar areas. These areas look as clean and original as you would expect a California driven car to be. There was some surface rust on the rocker panels, so I wire brushed it, treated it with rust preventer, and sprayed a light coat of Wurths undercoating on it. You can tell that it is the original rocker panel. Car had one respray in the early 1980s. It still shines up nice in some places, but it was stored under a tarp in an unheated garage, so the paint on the roof and the hood has blistered and is peeling. Evidence of the original bali blue can be found on all panels except the front fenders. The serial number "278" is stamped on both doors, rear decklid, and "300278" is stamped in the area below the radio, on the doorjamb tag, in front of the smugglers box, and the aluminum VIN tag above it. Both front fenders were replaced at different times due to minor accidents according to the previous owner. Neither the hood nor front bumper were ever replaced, and there is no evidence of accident damage to the inner fenders or front latch panel. One of the replacement fenders is fiberglass, but I have a *perfect* rust free original four screw '65 fender that will go with the car (see pics). Nice original orange hood badge and vintage PCA grille badge Both four screw horn grilles are intact. Chrome work is in very good original condition. 3/65 date code Lemmerz steel spare wheel with vintage Michelin XZX tire. Chrome 4.5" wheels are dated '66 and have brand new Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Great vintage look! The rear package shelf is completely rust free. When I swapped the original interior back in I took some photos of it...the original Bali blue paint is still there. Has original body seals as documented in the Dr. B Johnson's 911 Restorer's Guide to Authenticity. Headlights are the original Euro H1s which are *mint*. When the car was brought to the US, it was fitted with sealed beam headlights (see photos of it when I got it), but the original H1s were put into boxes and stored until I put them back on. Interior Condition: The previous owner did not like the red interior and switched it out for a black pepita interior in the 70s (See pics). He put the red front seats and side panels into storage, and painted the rear seats and some other panels black to match the other black interior pieces he acquired. I used lacquer thinner to remove the black paint from the panels and rear seats and it turned out pretty good. I got the original red seats and panels from his storage and installed them. Seats are in good original condition with no rips or tears Five button dash is very nice with no cracks at all! Rear parcel shelf vinyl is torn Original carpet in good conditon Headliner in good original conditon Non original wood dash, ashtray is missing and covered over with wood Aluminum wood wheel has some cracks in the wood, but is otherwise nice. All electrical systems are working including the headlights, turn signals, wipers, and all guages except the oil level guage. Windows and door latches work Mechanical Condition: Original engine and Solex carburetors in excellent original condition 83,800+ kilometers on the odometer, which stopped working shortly before storage, but close to accurate mileage according to previous owner. Mechanic owner kept up with any oil leaks...very dry underneath! Car was run and driven occasionally around the block since 1986. It hadn't been started for 2 years when I bought it, so I did a proper revival on the engine and brakes. New plugs, genuine Beru plug wires, Bosch cap, rotor, points and condensor Drain and clean fuel tank and replace fuel lines Change oil and adjust valves Marvel mystery oil in cylinders, let sit for two weeks Turn over engine to build oil pressure Fix carburetor leaks Compression on all cylinders between 148-159 psi (see pics of the compression gauge for each cylinder) New master cylinder, brake lines replaced, fresh brake fluid Clutch and synchros are good, sloppy shifter (needs bushings) Car now runs and drives well, but the Solexes and mechanical fuel pumps need to be gone through properly. Heat exchangers and muffler in good condition Links: LOTS of additional photos Make sure to read my captions under the photos. Videos of #278 running/driving (you can also see my 993) Alois Ruf's Bali Blue 901...something this car can aspire to! Skip about 5 minutes in to see how it was lovingly restored. On Apr-08-12 at 10:17:40 PDT, seller added the following information: Here are some additional details that people suggested I add to the description: Headliner condition is good for it's age but will need the rear edges to be refit, and staining attended to.Door jamb vinyl will need replacement and or refittingI overstated the condition of the replacement fender and should clarify: I thinks it's a *perfect* fender for restoring this car, but it has some surface rust that you can see in the pictures. No dents or dings or rust-through...for a used fender from 1965 it's as clean and straight as you will ever see.The dual mechanical fuel pumps are present but need to be gone through and rebuilt. These can be rebuilt for a very reasonable cost. Please feel free to ask any questions about the car and/or arrange a visit to view it. On Apr-10-12 at 17:11:44 PDT, seller added the following information: Forgot to mention...the auction includes all of the original Solex air filter housing parts. I had removed them to adjust the Solexes for better running. Auction also includes a vintage Colgan bra that replicates the bra used on the test drives at the factory. Had some requests for pictures of the fuel pumps, bra, and battery box area, so I added them to the linked pictures above.
