Vehicle Detail
1971 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 I own a FJ40 restoration shop, I’m thinning my inventory due to the enormous work load I have. This is a great entry level FJ40; it runs and drives well, not too rusty, and mostly stock. This FJ spent 3 weeks in my shop going through the mechanicals. I’m letting this one go on this no-reserve auction meaning bid to buy it. I drove this FJ 30 miles today, it handles very well for what it is, is fairly quiet, ready for the new owner to take it to the next level, or just enjoy as-is. The original owner did a complete engine rebuild and clutch job in 2002, then he passed on and it sat in a barn until I took it home. The original F motor is completely rebuilt; I adjusted the valves, complete tune-up. The compression on all 6 is excellent, oil pressure excellent, charging system works great, stays cool. I was so impressed I dropped a $200 Optima battery in it. The brakes work, goes down the road straight, all the diffs and boxes sound great, clutch and 3 speed on the floor work as they should. No serious wander or jumping around as found in most of these. I put nice new wheels and tires on it, size 31/10.5/15. The exhaust is good, gas and odometer work. Miles show 42k, I was told that is original from the original owner’s family, but really no way to verify that. I had a great time on my 30 mile test drive with my Labrador in the front seat. This is not the typical high dollar mint FJ40 I sell on eBay, actually nice to not worry about bug splats etc. so much, just enjoy it. BODY Rust is the most important thing to consider when buying any FJ40. The FJ40 is an incredible design, but Toyota did not build the body to drain water correctly. This is why 95% of FJ40’s have moderate to serious rust issues. This FJ40 is better than most. The floors and tub are solid, there is diamond plate covering parts of it, I’ll assume there is some rust on the rear sill lip as there always is, and some on the quarters. Owning over 600 FJ40’s I promise this one is not that bad compared to most. There are some dings and dents, the doors and top are all in great shape. Crack in the windshield, rest of the glass is good. Overall, this FJ40 is a great start for full restoration (that was my plan) but I have much too many high dollar restos in line right now. It is a great project for a novice or just drive it. FJ40’s are the most sought after 4x4 on the planet, they only go up in value. While I’ve sold them in the past to celebrities in the 100-125k range, you can own this one for pennies on that and still have that cool factor. Please keep in mind I did not do a full resto on this one, it may need tinkering and work along the way, I think most people like to do that as it is part of the fun. I hold a clean clear WA state title in my name for this FJ. I require a $1000 non-refundable deposit via PayPal directly after the auction is over, the rest within 7 days closed auction. I have a shipping broker that has done perfect for me on the last 60 shipments, but I will work with your broker as well. I will deliver this FJ40 within 300 miles of Benton City WA at $2.00 a loaded mile, to the US border, but not into Canada. 1971 model year is emissions exempt in all 50 states. The FJ and fuel must be paid before it leaves my property. You pay the trucking company directly if you need that service. I welcome 3rd party inspections, I own Auto Appraisals & Pre-Buy Inspections so skip me when looking in the phone book. Thanks and Happy Bidding! I have a mint original 79 FJ40 on eBay right now, and a 76 CJ7 Jeep. 1 comment I have to add. Since all the apocalypse talk on TV, I’ve sold a bunch of these to “Preppers” YES they are EMP proof, no computers in these guys. I have thousands of extra parts in my shop and container, should I bury them for the end of the world, or stay in business building and fixing existing FJ’s in a mad max life?
